UDC-CAUSES doesn’t just work in offices- we plant our hands in the soil to grow! The Center for Urban Resilience, Innovation and Infrastructure (CURII) decided to host their team meeting at the UDC Firebird Research Farm located in Beltsville, MD.
Nature encompasses the college’s mission and vision. CURII works with UDC students, partners, and community members on developing integrated resilience solutions to improve urban resilience and community health.
The center offers various community education and training programs.
✅ Green Infrastructure Program ~ is now accepting applications for their summer cohort certification, offered at no cost to District residents who qualify.
✅ DC Master Naturalist program is a six week instruction training + 40 hours of volunteer services to understand local habitats and engage in citizen science activities.
🌱UDC Van Ness Farmers Market- Saturdays, 9 am - 2 pm - Main campus
🌱Lamond Riggs Farmers Market- UDC Community College, Fridays, 4 pm - 8 pm
🌱Lamond Riggs Urban Food Hub - offers a living learning classroom; a 5000 sq. ft. of hydroponics and aquaponics research facility, native plant nursery, a community garden with compost training, commercial kitchen, and a newly installed “Ag Pod” unit.
🌱UDC Green Roof - offering tours at the Van Ness campus.

The American Water Resources Association (AWRA) hosted the 14th National Capital Region Water Resources Symposium on April 10, 2026, at the University of the District of Columbia. The full-day event brought together professionals from government agencies, academia, the private sector, and nonprofit organizations to examine challenges and opportunities in the sustainable management of water resources and infrastructure at regional, national, and international levels.
The symposium included panel discussions, student and faculty research presentations, and poster sessions, along with time for networking throughout the day, including shared meals and an evening gathering. Dr. Tolessa Deksissa, Ph.D., Director of the Water Resources Research Institute, Professional Science Master’s Program, and Environmental Quality Testing Laboratory within the College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES), participated in the symposium alongside his students. Their presentations contributed to the exchange of research and perspectives, highlighting ongoing work and emerging issues in water resources.
UDC students and faculty showcased their research throughout the event, offering insight into current challenges and practical approaches.
