We are proud to share that the UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology has been awarded an Athena SWAN Gold Award. Awarded in January 2026 and valid until January 2031, this recognises our sustained, evidence‑based commitment to gender equality and inclusive culture across staff and students. This milestone is particularly significant as: · Our Athena SWAN journey reflects over a decade of collective effort · We are the first Institute in the Faculty of Brain Sciences to receive an Athena SWAN Gold Award · We are currently one of only 7 departments across UCL to hold a Gold Award Thank you to the many colleagues and students whose leadership, data‑driven action and commitment made this possible. As a Gold award holder, we remain committed to sharing good practice and driving meaningful, sector‑wide change.

🤖 How might AI agents fast-track breakthroughs in dementia? Dr Mathieu Bourdenx, Senior Research Fellow at the UK Dementia Research Institute (UKDRI) at UCL, is working with FutureHouse to test-drive an ‘AI scientist’ — a digital research assistant that’s helping fast-track breakthroughs in dementia. By feeding it real data, the AI generates brand-new research directions that humans haven’t explored yet. This could lead to an acceleration in discovery in dementia research that could be transformative for patients. The Queen Square Brain Bank (QSBB), one of the largest brain banks in the world, is developing a world-leading AI-centred brain tissue resource known as Reta Lila Weston BRAIN platform. Using machine learning, they’re analysing 2,500 donated brain and spinal cord samples to uncover new insights into Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases. The construction of the new AI platform is a collaboration between the QSBB and AI researchers in UCL Computer Science and the UCL Hawkes Institute. You may have seen it in the news headlines today: a UCL led trial is aiming to transform Alzheimer’s diagnosis with a simple blood test. More than 1,000 patients with suspected dementia are being recruited from memory clinics across the UK to see whether the test leads to faster and more reliable diagnoses. More than half a million people in the UK have Alzheimer’s, the most common form of dementia, but getting a diagnosis can take years; the trial aims to speed up this process. Although these blood tests are not standalone diagnostic tools, they could be used as part of a wider clinical assessment to confirm the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease for people who already have memory or thinking problems. This trial is part of the Blood Biomarker Challenge, a multi-million-pound initiative supported by Alzheimer’s Society, Alzheimer’s Research UK, and players of People’s Postcode Lottery. “It’s inspiring to be part of a team that is pushing the boundaries in genetic therapies.” We visit the Genetic Therapy Accelerator Centre to find out how the new centre sparks innovation. The centre was set up in 2022 as a joint initiative between Queen Square Institute of Neurology and Great Ormond Street Hospital’s Institute of Child Health to develop cutting-edge RNA and AAV gene therapies for neurological and neuromuscular disorders The centre also leads a genetic therapy core technology platform, a research-grade AAV production service, Set up in Queen Square House earlier this year, the facility will move to 256 Grays Inn Road when it opens in 2027, with dedicated core staff to support consistent AAV construct design, production and vector quality control. “Every science has its art, every art has its science.” Earlier this week, we hosted a private view of Everything is Connected – UCL Public Art’s (@ucleastengage ) latest project. Led by @directorofpublicartucl Sam Wilkinson, we toured the exhibition showcasing artworks that will soon become permanent installations in UCL’s new neuroscience centre (@uclqsion ) on Gray’s Inn Road. Rather than focusing on disease, the art strategy centres on hope, warmth, and harmony. The artists – including anniecattrell and @freyagabie – were selected for their focus on art-science communication and deep social engagement. Some pieces also emerged through a creative matchmaking process between artists and academics. If you pay attention, KQ collaborations are everywhere in this project: 🤝 One artwork uses AI and the vast underwater sound archive at the @britishlibrary (which may be the largest in the world) to create an experiential soundscape. 🤝 @wellcometrust -funded scientists like Dr Tom Miller, researching memory and the hippocampus, are also involved. 🤝 A memorial will honour Professor Anita Harding, who was the UK’s first female professor of Clinical Neurology at @ucl . 🤝 Even the exhibition title is typeset in Harding, the custom typeface of @nature_the_journal . This project is about more than public art. One of its core aims is to enhance the culture of how academics and creatives can work together to create something neither could have made alone. We’re very excited to see this new building take shape in our neighbourhood ✨
