UCL Illuminated - marking 200 years of UCL ✨ We officially launched our bicentenary celebrations with UCL Illuminated - a large-scale light and sound experience transforming the iconic Wilkins Building and Quad into a living timeline of the university’s history. From 1826 to today, the projections reflected two centuries of ideas, inclusion, research and global impact. Standing in the rain alongside students, staff, alumni and the wider London community, it felt like more than a show - it felt like a reminder of what a university community represents across generations. Missed the show? Don’t worry, catch up with the link in bio! #UCL200 #UCLIlluminated #UCL

🎓🌍 Congratulations to UCL medical student Rohan Patel, who was selected to present a clinical case at the Clinical Grand Round during ESCMID Global 2026 in Munich. Rohan is the first medical student to be selected for the session in its 20-year history. He presented alongside fellows from around the world to an audience of more than 3,000 healthcare professionals. The opportunity followed his work with the Department of Infection at UCLH and highlights the impact of student-led clinical research and collaboration. We are proud to see UCL students contributing on the international stage 👏 🔗 Read more via the link in bio. #UCL #UCLMedicalSciences #MedicalEducation #ClinicalResearch #ESCMID #InfectiousDiseases

New research led by UCL and the @thefranciscrickinstitute has revealed how lung cancer changes genetically as it spreads through the body in the final stages of life. The study found that metastatic tumours continue to evolve, becoming increasingly different from the original cancer and potentially harder to treat. Researchers hope these findings could help identify new ways to slow or stop advanced lung cancer progression. At UCL Faculty of Medical Sciences, we are proud to support pioneering research advancing our understanding of cancer and improving future patient outcomes. 🧬 #UCL #MedicalSciences #LungCancer #CancerResearch #UCLResearch #PrecisionMedicine

1 in 10 NHS operations are cancelled within 24 hours - and nearly 40% of these cancellations may be avoidable. New research led by UCL researchers from UCL Medical Sciences and UCL Surgery & Interventional Science found that many postponements happen because patients are not adequately prepared before surgery. The study, published in the British Journal of Anaesthesia, analysed data from 91 NHS trusts and highlights the importance of earlier screening, better perioperative care, and supporting patients while they wait for treatment. Lead researchers Dr James Bedford and Dr Adam Hunt say improving preparation before surgery could reduce cancellations, improve patient outcomes, and make better use of NHS resources. 🔗 Read more via UCL News #UCL #MedicalSciences #NHS #HealthcareResearch #PatientCare #Surgery #HealthResearch #PerioperativeCare #UCLResearch

A ground-breaking UCL-led clinical trial in bowel cancer has reported zero relapses at 33 months follow-up. Patients with stage II–III bowel cancer were treated with a short course of immunotherapy before surgery, with earlier results showing that 59% had no detectable cancer after treatment. The study also used personalised blood tests to monitor treatment response, supporting more tailored approaches to care. These findings highlight the potential for immunotherapy to improve outcomes for patients with high-risk bowel cancer. #UCL #MedicalSciences #CancerResearch #Immunotherapy #ClinicalTrials

🚀 Big news from UCL Medical Sciences! A UCL-led international team has secured $25M Cancer Grand Challenges funding to rethink how we treat cancer. Led by Professor Bart Vanhaesebroeck, Team REWIRE-CAN will tackle colorectal cancer by turning cancer’s own survival mechanisms against itself - pushing tumour cells beyond their limits to trigger collapse or restore treatment sensitivity. 🌍 Bringing together experts across the UK, US and Netherlands, this ambitious collaboration aims to transform how we understand and treat cancer. This is science without boundaries. This is impact. #UCL #MedicalSciences #CancerResearch #CancerGrandChallenges #GlobalScience #ResearchImpact #ColorectalCancer

Breakthrough research from the UCL Cancer Institute is helping the immune system do what it does best - spot and fight cancer. 🧬 A new method makes cancer cells more visible by allowing faulty RNA to produce abnormal proteins that act as flags for immune detection. This could help improve how patients respond to immunotherapy across a range of cancers. A powerful step forward in making the invisible, visible. 🔗 Read more via the link in bio #UCL #MedicalSciences #CancerResearch #Immunotherapy #Innovation #ResearchImpact #LifeSciences #UCLResearch
