How can arts education change lives? UCLA Arts’ Visual and Performing Arts Education program prepares the next generation of artist-educators who use creative practice, teaching, and community engagement to transform learning environments and expand access to the arts. Faculty and students work across teaching artistry, curriculum design, performance, visual arts, and community-based practice. Their work is rooted in equity, committed to access, and oriented toward meaningful, lasting impact. The work they do reaches into public schools and communities across Los Angeles and beyond, shaping a more inclusive and imaginative future for cultural learning. #BruinGivingDay #UCLAArts #UCLA

New Article 📚✨ What does it mean to teach in ways that truly sustain culture, identity, and community? This qualitative study explores how early-career teaching artists—artists who also teach—navigate complex questions about knowledge, art, and identity while working in multigenerational, culturally sustaining settings. Drawing on culturally sustaining pedagogy and the dynamic systems model of role identity, the study finds that teaching artists’ beliefs about teaching, learning, and community don’t develop in isolation—they evolve through ongoing interaction with their environments and broader sociopolitical contexts. ✨ Key insight: Teaching in culturally sustaining spaces can spark deep “onto-epistemic” exploration—shaping not just what educators do, but how they understand themselves, their work, and the communities they serve. These findings offer important implications for how we prepare and support teaching artists committed to equity and culturally responsive practice. 🔗 See link in bio to read the full case study. #CulturallySustainingPedagogy #TeachingArtists #ArtsEducation #EducationResearch #EquityInEducation #CommunityEngagement #TeacherIdentity #QualitativeResearch #StudentSuccess #EducationEquity

Congratulations to the sixth graders of @wrightsteam on a fantastic week in this year’s classroom-in-residence program, a collaboration between @uclavapae & @hammer_museum : a free, innovative program designed to strengthen student and teacher learning about art through a weeklong, immersive experience at the Hammer Museum & on campus at UCLA Arts. The students were creative, fun, energetic, and enthusiastic… and our VAPAE teaching artists Bianca & Luz, along with all the Hammer staff & student educators, were so welcoming, caring & flexible … we had a blast and we all learned so much! It was joyful! Thank you to our cherished partners at the Hammer, what a great pleasure it is to make this happen with you every year! #artseducation #museumeducation #danceeducation #teachingartists #classroominresidence
