Today we celebrate International Workers’ Day, also known as #MayDay. This holiday originated in the late nineteenth century when a national federation of unions launched a campaign to establish an 8-hour workday by May 1, 1886. Workers at the time routinely labored from anywhere between 10-to-14 hours a day; steelworkers, for example, had to work 24-hour shifts twice a month in dangerous conditions with no safety protections. After 1886, international labor groups started to commemorate May 1st as International Workers’ Day or May Day. On this day @uclalosh honors workers all over the world as we continue to call for worker safety, health, and justice.
Today, on Workers’ Memorial Day, we honor those who have lost their lives on the job. According to a report from @aflcio , 385 workers died each day from hazardous working conditions in 2023. Today we stand with our partners and reaffirm our commitment to ensure that every worker can return home safely at the end of the day.

We’re still not over this year’s 2026 Young Worker Leadership Academy (YWLA)! Over the course of three days, we convened with teens from all over California and their adult mentors, returning youth mentors, and guest speakers for an eventful program designed to introduce young workers to the world of workplace health and safety. Participants learned about issues impacting working teens, practiced advocating for young workers, and designed community projects, which they will bring into their schools and local communities.
Thanks to our partners: @ucberkeleylohp , @irvinefdn , @ca_dir , and State Compensation Insurance Fund. Congrats, YWLA 2026 participants! We can’t wait to see what comes from this year’s academy.
In 2023, California reported 472,500 job-related injuries and illnesses and 439 job-related fatalities. We know these numbers are likely an undercount, as many cases go unreported. The most common injuries? Sprains and strains, ongoing pain, cuts and punctures, and fractures. Every number represents a worker and a preventable risk.
