Did you know UCLA’s most iconic fountain was designed to flow… backwards? 👀💧 In 1968, the Inverted Fountain made its debut as a one-of-a-kind design where water flows inward instead of shooting into the air. Originally, the plan was for a traditional fountain, but Chancellor Franklin Murphy challenged UCLA's architectural landscape team to think differently. With strong winds in the Franz Hall courtyard making an upward spray impractical, architect Howard Troller took inspiration from natural hot springs and created something entirely unique. Water now moves across a bed of multi-colored rocks before cascading into an off-center well, creating the sound of a flowing stream right in the heart of campus. The result? A space that feels both natural and unmistakably UCLA. Over time, the Inverted Fountain became more than just a landmark, it became a Bruin tradition. From playful freshman “initiations” to seniors wading in after their final exams, legend has it that stepping in the fountain twice before graduation might just add an extra quarter to your time at UCLA… 💙💛 #UCLAHistory #UCLANostalgia

We are so excited to announce Mark Foster, a Los Angeles–based composer, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and the frontman of Foster the People, as our 2026 GIG Award recipient! Mark rose to global prominence with the Grammy-nominated debut album Torches, featuring the hit single “Pumped Up Kicks.” As the band’s primary songwriter, his work blends infectious pop melodies with deeper themes of hope, duality, and the human condition. Beyond music, he is deeply involved in humanitarian work, partnering with organizations like Water.org and buildOn to support access to clean water and education. He has participated in initiatives like climbing Mount Kilimanjaro to raise awareness for the global water crisis and has helped fund and build schools in underserved communities around the world. Please attend the UCLA Memorial Day Ceremony as we pay tribute to courageous Bruins who gave their lives in U.S. military service in defense of our freedom. The ceremony will be held on Wednesday, May 20, from 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM on the UCLA campus. The program will feature a performance of the national anthem, the presentation of the colors by our color guard, and brief commemorative remarks. Following the ceremony, we invite you to stay for lunch and a time of shared reflection. Former @UCLAFootball quarterbacks championed a fundraiser for @UCLAMCH on April 18. Patients and families visited with UCLA quarterback alumni for brunch and activities generously donated by the Heisman Trophy Trust (@heismantrophy ). The event raised over $225,000 for hospital programs and research.
