UC Irvine Law’s externship program offers students academic credit and hands-on legal experience through placements with judges, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies at local, national, and international levels.
This fall, 3L Niki Kazemi completed an externship with the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, working in the Civic Space and Technology Unit. During her externship, she analyzed national cybercrime laws and their implications for free expression and evaluated social media and communications platform policies aimed at protecting human rights defenders and journalists.

A Lobb family tradition continues at UC Irvine Law 🎓
UC Irvine Law alumnus Sean Lobb (’18), now a litigation associate at Stradling Yocca Carlson & Rauth LLP and Secretary of the UC Irvine Law Alumni Association Board, welcomed his younger brother Braden Lobb (’26) into the UC Irvine Law alumni family at this year’s commencement. Braden plans to return to UC Irvine Law this fall for the Graduate Tax Program before beginning his legal career at Rutan & Tucker.
The Lobbs now join two other sets of UC Irvine Law alumni siblings. Congratulations to Braden, Sean, and the entire Lobb family!

Last week, the UC Irvine Law community gathered to celebrate the Class of 2026 — marking the culmination of years of hard work, service, and perseverance for students across our J.D., Global LL.M., and Graduate Tax LL.M. programs. The ceremony featured heartfelt reflections, moments of recognition, and inspiring remarks from keynote speaker the Honorable Alison J. Nathan of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
In the days leading up to Commencement, we also recognized the extraordinary impact of our students beyond the classroom — nearly 11,000 pro bono hours contributed, with 92 percent of the class participating in service to underserved communities. We also celebrated leadership, mentorship, and public service at the 2026 UC Irvine Law Student Life and Pro Bono Awards.

UC Irvine Law recently earned a series of strong rankings, garnering national recognition for excellence in graduate employment, practical training, public service and academic quality. The top-tier results reflect the Law School’s distinctive approach to legal education — which combines rigorous academics with real-world training and a deep commitment to public interest work — leading to successful employment outcomes for students.
“When UC Irvine Law was founded, it had big ambitions to establish itself as a top-tier institution with a culture and curriculum that differ significantly from more traditional law schools,” said Dean and Chancellor’s Professor of Law Austen Parrish. “That vision has been surpassed — and while no ranking can fully capture what makes a law school exceptional, it’s gratifying to see our founding ambitions reflected in these recent rankings. This is such a special law school in an amazingly dynamic legal community, and I couldn’t be prouder of all that our faculty, staff, students, and alumni have achieved.”

UC Irvine Defending Democracy Clinic Director Paul Hoffman Delivered Oral Argument at the U.S. Supreme Court
Students in the Law School’s Defending Democracy Clinic joined Paul Hoffman for his oral argument at the U.S. Supreme Court on April 28 in the human rights case Cisco Systems, Inc. v. Doe 1, a case about whether American corporations can be held liable for helping foreign governments commit human rights abuses. “The students in the Defending Democracy Clinic have provided invaluable assistance on this case since the Court accepted the case in January,” said Paul Hoffman. “They have been an integral part of the litigation team.” Image Description: Paul Hoffman and clinic students in Washington, D.C. post-argument.
Professor Ari Waldman, Director of the Center for Technology & Justice, was quoted in the Los Angeles Times on Disneyland’s rollout of facial recognition at park entrances, a new system designed to verify tickets and prevent fraud.
“The normalization of facial surveillance is really problematic," Waldman said. "We can’t go around life hiding our faces, so this isn’t just next step in surveillance; it’s qualitatively different. In a world of facial recognition, when people leave their house, it automatically means they’re identified.”
