Incredibly excited to share that I've been selected as a mentee for @screencraftworks 2026 Cross-border mentoring programme.
I'm looking forward to learning and collaborating with the other creatives in the programme, and discovering what this next stage of career advancement has for me.
Stories. Culture. A little bit of rebellion against the ordinary.
This week on WIA Spotlight, we’re featuring @ucheeeenna . A screenwriter, filmmaker, and Igbo culture enthusiast whose work continues to shape powerful narratives in Nollywood.
From writing for shows like Riona, Wura, and Nwaanyi Ike, to directing her debut short film I Too, Crave Death, Uchenna is telling stories rooted in culture, faith, emotion, and truth.
Also… she loves to read. A lot. 📚
Catch our conversation with her on the craft, the culture, and the stories that refuse to stay unwritten.

"Writing is the great burden and the great honour, the great gift of my life."

Incredibly happy to share that I've received the @thefilmjoint award for Best Screenplay (Original or Adapted) for my debut short film 'I Too, Crave Death'
Writing is incredibly hard but also fulfilling work. So much done in solitude. In the quiet of the mind. People see the finished work: the brilliant script and the beautiful story. No one sees the sleepless nights. The mini crash outs while you outline story at 2am in the morning. The horrible first draft.
But adim grateful - I'm grateful. To be here. To be part of things. To have done this as long and as much as I have. Writing has been the great burden and the great joy of my life, and I intend to keep at it for as long as my Chi agrees.
This one is for the brilliant, often underrated writers of Nollywood: working through uncertain times. Creating brilliantly. Showing up. Doing. In spite of.
Jisike nụ ike - Welldone. Daalụ Nu - Thank you. You are all minor gods of Creation. Move accordingly.
Xoxo,
Uche dị Ebube.
2025 :
Lots of Oseburụwa nyelu m aka
Lots of screaming matches with my chi
Lots of tears (especially in July. Oh I cried like a lost child in July)
But lots of Joy too. Lessons were learned. Ideas were created. Love was felt. That much was clear.
Daalu to 2025. You were an interesting year. Ka odii. Azụ gị ka kwa iru gị mma.
2025, the drowning year.
But guess who floated? Guess who snatched moments of joy?
Nna,A julu m ajụ - I refused to go under.
Kwechiri'D like mad. 2025 couldn't touch this glow.
And still I raise like soaking garri!
(Sorry Maya Angelou🙏🏾)
Stranded between where they’ve been and what they’ve never said.
Uchenna Ugwu’s (@ucheeeenna ) I Too, Crave Death draws you into a moment that feels painfully ordinary - a mother and daughter waiting by the roadside - yet slowly unravels into something far deeper.
A beautiful, haunting short showing on Ibidi Shorts on YouTube!
ALERT!!! The fan favourite short film at Kitale Film Week 2025, "I too, Crave Death," from Uchenna Ugwu @ucheeeenna (2024), is now available to watch on Ibidi Shorts on YouTube. Access now on your smart TV or smartphone at no cost. #itoocravedeath #kitalefilmweek
I really like this scene because the characters' body language tells you everything you need to know about these two people’s history and relationship with each other, even before their conversation properly begins.
