Pain shapes daily life, long before it ever reaches a chart, a form, or a diagnosis. Cara Nania’s doctoral research begins there, with the experiences that are most often missed. Cara Nania, BA’19, MSc’23, is a third-year PhD student in @werklundschool at the @ucalgary and a 2025 Killam Scholar. Her research focuses on pain and mental health in youth with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), an area that remains underexplored despite its widespread impact. While much attention has focused on cognitive and behavioural outcomes, Cara is addressing what has been left behind. “Significantly less attention has been paid to the experience of physical health symptoms, particularly pain,” she explains. Supported by UCalgary’s strong research culture and interdisciplinary training, Cara’s work is building a more complete understanding of health and well-being for youth with FASD, with the goal of improving how pain is recognized and treated in practice. Click the link in our bio to discover out 2025 Killam Scholars and their research.
