Each May, the College of Social Sciences and Humanities, alongside the Faculties of Arts, Education, Law and the Alberta School of Business, celebrates Asian Heritage Month and the work of University of Alberta faculty, researchers, instructors and students who are demonstrating leadership in creating a world that is more equitable and inclusive — one that uplifts the whole community, in all of its diversity. Officially recognized following the efforts of Senator Vivienne Poy, the month serves as a time to collectively recognize the contributions and diverse stories of all those Canadians who can trace their roots back to East Asia, Southern Asia, Western, Central and Southeast Asia. It’s a time to listen, engage and learn. Across our college and faculties, we are proud to be part of this shared commitment to amplifying voices, advancing understanding and celebrating the richness of Asian communities. We invite you to join in the celebration and explore the diversity of Asian experiences by checking out the university's collections, stories, histories and resources on the 2026 Asian Heritage Month website, found via the link in our bio.

On April 23, the Centre for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education (CMASTE) in the #UAlberta Faculty of Education and Dr. Nadir Erbilgin, Chair of the Department of Renewable Resources in @ualberta_ales , welcomed around 120 students from Father Michael Troy Jr. High to campus for Sustainability Under the Microscope! CMASTE and Dr. Erbilgin worked with teachers and students on research projects related to sustainability using a portable scanning electron microscope, so they could experience first-hand how to design an experiment, how to collect and analyze data, and how to use technology to answer scientific questions. The event gave the students an opportunity to share their findings — on everything from eco-friendly alternatives to synthetic hair and glitter to bioplastics and the microscopic differences between live and dead leaves — through poster presentations in the University Commons atrium. CMASTE director Dr. Jerine Pegg said the event was inspiring. "All of the Grade 7 students participated, not just a select group, they were all prepared, and they worked as a team to present their work. I think we often underestimate what students can do. They produced amazing work!"

“When I first started university, I was terrified to step outside my comfort zone. Academically, I’ve always had a natural love for chemistry, but I was also drawn to the humanities. At first, they felt like completely different worlds, but the more I explored both, the more I realized that I actually didn’t have to choose between them. That’s what led me to teaching, a place where both sides of me get to exist at the same time. This also gives me the opportunity to help inspire future female generations to pursue careers or education in STEM. Now, I’m on the path to becoming a chemistry teacher, and it feels like the perfect blend of everything I care about: science, people, communication, and making learning feel exciting instead of intimidating. Looking back, the thing I was most afraid of, stepping outside my comfort zone, is exactly what opened the door to the future I want.” Hana is a fourth-year secondary education student. She currently volunteers with the Centre for Autism Students' Association as the vice-president of marketing, and as director of external relations for TeamUP Science. She also has a dog named Pepper. 🌶️ #UAlberta

Today is #UAlberta Giving Day, an opportunity to unite our community in support of student success. Donor contributions go beyond a mere donation — they become a catalyst for empowering students to excel, focus on their goals, and pursue their purpose. Elementary education student and Pandas goalie Grace Glover knows first-hand the difference donor-funded students supports can make as she strives for athletic excellence while pursuing her academic goals. “During the school year, the support really helps me focus on academics and athletics," Grace says. “It’s impacted my life so much, and I can’t thank donors enough.” Your donations this Giving Day will go to the Education Student Support Fund, which helps students facing financial challenges to focus on their studies, complete their program and pursue their dreams. Donations made on Giving Day will be matched up to $100,000 — doubling the impact of your gift! The match will stay with the fund to which the donation is made, so every dollar to the ESSF directly benefits our students. We’re just one week away from U of A Giving Day! On March 26, the university community will come together for 24 hours to support student success, one gift at a time. In the Faculty of Education, your Giving Day donations will directly benefit the Education Student Support Fund (ESSF) — a vital resource that provides financial assistance to undergraduate Education students who are facing financial barriers. And here’s something to plan for: There are $100,000 in matching funds available, which means your donation will be matched dollar-for-dollar while the funding lasts, starting at 8 a.m. MT on March 26.
