Our last morning in Yosemite was a tough one. My alarm went off at 4am as it had every morning for last two perfect weeks. Normally Cero and I should spring out of bed excited for what our day would hold. But this morning all I wanted to do was snooze my alarm, stay in bed and force another day in the Yosemite Valley. It felt like the last morning, waking up next to a lover, savoring every second, before they left, not knowing the next time I would feel their warm, loving embrace. But atlas, excitement and curiosity overpowered my body and i begrudgingly climbed into the dark, cold, front seat of the van.
Over the last two weeks I had spent every second possible surrounded by these giant, granite faces. I focused my camera with intent day after day, looking through a loupe, sharpening every crack, learning it's story through the observations of it's imperfections.
Using the most intimate form of photography in any setting helps inspire a connection, but in this place under these conditions it was something more. A feeling of not only connection, but belonging, and understanding. I was in a place, for the first time in decades, where I could truly, be...

With crusty sleep in my eyes, and surrounded by darkness, I trudged up a hill. Dragging my cheap, over capacity filled Walmart Wagon to Glacier Point.
With my forearms burning and finger tips chilled by cool autumn air, I reminisced. I fantasized about lives I never lived.. walking in the footsteps of photographers that showed me these landscapes as a child. I remember growing up a poor kid, in Atlanta Georgia, going to work at an art gallery with my Mom. As she was just starting to use a camera as her medium, she told me harrowing stories of Ansel Adams adventures. She told how he would leave everything he knew behind, for months on the road, documenting the unknown and creating beautiful art, as he explored the American West. At that time travel was a luxury for our family, so all I had was my imagination and Ansels photos to fuel my inspiration.
30 years later... The feeling, to find myself in the exact place I manifested as a child, is hard to put in words. But I knew I was in the right place, and with mornings like these, in my heart, I know I'm on the right path.

The two weeks we spent in Yosemite will undoubtedly one day be stories of legend. While I still haven't discovered the words to describe such a profound experience, what I do have is priceless.
Images of the intangible, a momento of the past. Existing in the here and now, five seconds of light, frozen time, forever living in a piece of glass. A memory where life became inspired by what I was creating, and what I was creating became inspired by life.

Hands smelling like a combination of stale coffee residue and pennies, I dug through the cup holder of my mom's car. Counting out just enough change so my mom could get a cup of coffee and some gas. It was Sunday, the day of the week where my mom would exhaust the last of her funds, gambling on the art she created and the antiques she picked from barns and old buildings through out the week. I'd help her load and unload all her hard work at the weekly flea market and watch as she would wheel and deal, hustling to make enough money to pay the bills. No matter how busy or slow the market was, her gamble always turned out in our favor.
I had spent 2 weeks in Yosemite during the fall creating meaningful work as a tribute to my mom and the anniversary of her passing. What was created was more than i expected and I fully planned on entering my work into the Yosemite Renaissance art exhibit and competition, as soon as funds would allow.
After a slow few months making tintypes in California this winter, the deadline for the Yosemite Renaissance approached. Funds were dismal at best, I flashed back to those early Sunday mornings as a kid, counting sticky change with my Mom. Sacrificing cartoons and sleeping in and gambling on a dream.
I flipped open my computer, checked my bank account and using the last of my funds, with a 7-8% chance of being accepted into the competition, I gambled on my dream.
A few days ago I was informed that my work had been selected for the 41st Yosemite Renaissance, while this is a step in the right direction, I know there's a lot more work to do... but much like my mom I also know that everything is always going to work out as long as I believe.

Four years ago, after a series of unfortunate events, life's bumpy road led me to the Central Coast of California to make tintype portraits at La Cuesta Ranch Trail Run. It wasn't my first event making portraits, but it was the one that gave me a glimpse of my future. Since then, I have traveled the American West, producing over 1000 portraits for the people I meet along the way. While I spend only 5 minutes with each person, the connection and photograph we create is timeless.
After not attending La Cuesta last year due to back surgery, I am very excited to be joining the people I see as family, in a place I consider as one of my homes.
I will be making Tintype Portraits on Friday and Saturday, the same way photographers did in the 1800s. Using a chemical process, a darkroom on site, and a 120 year old camera, we create unique, one of a kind portraits that are sure to last generations. https://tylertomasello.square.site/
