This weekend, I got to compete in my first @artfieldssc Portrait Contest. There were so many amazing fellow artists that participated. The work we were able to put out in just an hour was mind blowing . I keep telling everyone that I went in expecting it to feel like one of my fav Food Network shows, “Chopped,” but the energy didn’t seem nearly as frantic. I felt super cool, controlled, and relaxed. I’m really proud of how my piece turned out! Please meet Barry White (@typheadamus ), one of our featured artists for the Crowned by the Roots exhibition! What an honor and a blessing to have him and his work as a part of this exhibition. Barry White is a South Carolina–based contemporary painter whose acrylic works center the beauty, strength, and vulnerability of Black men. Guided by intuition and emotion, Barry’s paintings explore themes of identity and self-acceptance through expressive realism and atmospheric color. Barry’s work has been exhibited at Roc Bottom Studios, Drummond Studio Gallery, and Gemini Arts, where it’s been recognized for its depth, honesty, and visual storytelling. Through his art, Barry invites viewers to witness the sacredness of visibility—to see Black men not as subjects of stereotype, but as embodiments of beauty, spirit, and truth.
