Join Nation editor and publisher Katrina vanden Heuvel and author William D. Hartung for a discussion of his new Bold Type book, The Trillion Dollar War Machine, co-authored with Ben Freeman. How much sway do military tech moguls like Peter Thiel, Elon Musk and Palmer Luckey have over the Trump administration (and some conservative and mainstream Democrats)? Where does profiteering in the name of national security end when the president’s son is on the board of a drone manufacturer and people in Trump world are betting on the outbreak of war and specific military actions? Hartung shows who is pulling the strings and pushing for war as he offers a blueprint for how we can shut down the war machine and restore American security and prosperity. This virtual conversation will leave ample time for audience Q&A. The event is free but registration is required. 🔗Click the link in bio to register.

Type Investigations is thrilled to announce that Maryam Saleh has joined the team as senior editor for the Springboard Project, an initiative that supports newsrooms serving historically marginalized communities in building investigative capacity. Saleh will mentor Springboard partners in producing impactful investigations, guiding them from story inception to final edits and publication. She will also work with the Type Investigations team to develop audience-engagement and collaborative-fundraising opportunities for newsroom collaborators. “I’m inspired by the work Type’s Springboard partners are already doing in and for their communities, and I’m thrilled that I get to work with them to strengthen their investigative chops,” Saleh said. “My hope is for the work we do together to reverberate in their newsrooms and communities for years to come.” Saleh was most recently the inaugural investigations editor at Rest of World, a global tech newsroom, and she has also held staff roles at The Intercept and Reveal from The Center for Investigative Reporting. Her final project at Rest of World was an investigation into a little-known Mexican surveillance giant with eyes on the U.S. border that was produced in partnership with Type Investigations. Her work as a reporter and editor spans immigration, criminal justice, politics, and global affairs. As a senior editor at The Intercept, she co-led coverage of Israel’s war on Gaza and edited a range of features and investigations into the death penalty, junk science, and environmental racism. “We are incredibly lucky that Maryam has come on board,” said Noy Thrupkaew, director of partnerships and a reporter at Type Investigations. “She is an incredible editor who brings deep rigor, sensitivity, and dedication to supporting emerging investigative journalists.” 🔗Click the link in bio to read more about Saleh and the Springboard Project.

Type Investigations is pleased to announce three new Springboard Project partnerships for 2026: India Currents @india.currents , Puente News Collaborative @puente_news , and South Side Weekly @southsideweekly . Through the Springboard Project, Type will be offering these newsrooms an infusion of editorial, research, and financial support to help strengthen their investigative capacity. They join ongoing Springboard partners Gulf States Newsroom and The Blacklight At New York Amsterdam News. “We at Type Investigations are thrilled to launch collaborations with these publications and expand our work with current Springboard newsrooms,” said Noy Thrupkaew, the director of partnerships at Type Investigations. “Each of our partners has earned the trust of historically underserved communities through rigorous reporting and deep relationships with their readerships, and we are honored to bring them together as a cohort and to support their work.” The Springboard Project launched in 2023 to help local newsrooms serving historically marginalized communities publish complex investigations and develop the resources to produce investigative work for years to come. 🔗 You can learn more about the Springboard Project at the link in bio!

Over the past year, The Nation and Type Investigations spoke with 43 tenants who faced eviction cases filed by American Landmark for properties in Charlotte, North Carolina; Summerville, South Carolina; and Jacksonville, Florida. These tenants reported a wide array of issues they say led to their eviction cases—from steep rent increases to a blizzard of fees, including those connected to the eviction filings themselves. American Landmark is also almost entirely owned by Elco, one of Israel’s largest corporations. For years, Elco, via its Electra Super Brand, has done extensive business in Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem. Read more from Thomas Birmingham at the link in our bio.

As more migrants self-deport and turn around before they get to the U.S. border, Paola Ramos @paoramos investigates what happens when migrants stop looking to America as a land of safety and opportunity. Ramos, reporting in partnership with Rolling Stone @rollingstone , traveled to Costa Rica and Panama to witness the growing trend of reverse migration up-close. She spoke with migrants, including 37-year-old Edinson, the de-facto leader of a group of migrants from Venezuela, as they navigated the arduous journey home—and traced the dissolution of the American dream. A year ago, such reverse migration would have been unimaginable. In 2024, during the Biden administration, more than 300,000 northbound migrants traversed the Darién Gap—the deadly spit of land linking North and South America via Central America. Now, the Darién is effectively closed. According to the United Nations Human Rights Office of the High Commissioner, only 2,831 people crossed the Darién between January and March 2025, representing a 98 percent decrease compared with 2024. Instead, thousands of migrants are giving up their hopes of living in the United States, and are venturing south instead. “When the border with the U.S. closed, everyone’s dreams stopped existing,” Edinson told Ramos. 🔗Click the link in bio to read the full investigation. 📸Miguel Fernández Flores @miguelfdzflores 🖋Paola Ramos

Type Media Center fellow E. Tammy Kim reports in @newyorkermag on the declaration of martial law by South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol, with which he intended to ban political meetings and strikes and subject media to government approval. The move sparked widespread protests and condemnation from lawmakers and global actors, and was quickly overturned, intensifying calls for his resignation. Check out our bio to read more.

In this @newyorkermag article, Eyal Press writes about how blue-collar workers have traditionally been loyal to Democrats, but many working-class voters, including union members, have shifted towards Trump and the Republican Party due to a belief that Democrats no longer prioritize their interests. Press discusses how working-class voters focus more heavily on economic issues such as jobs, healthcare, and wages, rather than social and cultural issues and explores if Harris will be able to win over voters who distrust Democrats as elites.
