Brick by brick, the future is taking shape!
Recently, leaders from Virginia MOCA and Virginia Wesleyan University gathered for a behind-the-scenes tour of our new home on the campus of @vawesleyan
Guided by our construction and design teams, trustees from both boards toured the site, walking through spaces that will soon be filled with art, learning, and connection. Our new home will feature expanded galleries, increasing our current exhibition and education space by 20%, and a new ARTlab that places educational experiences at the forefront of every visit. Behind the scenes, our improved administrative areas will offer more space and better tools for our team to collaborate and do what they do best—empower artists, serve our community, and bring contemporary art to life.
A huge thank you and special shoutout to @hourigangroup and @tymoffmoss for all they’re doing to bring our vision to life.
We can’t wait to share more as progress continues!

We’re sad that today is the last day of our week with Hampton University architecture students Kailyn and Alyssa. They spent this very busy week with us as part of their Spring Shadow Studio program, sponsored by AIA Coastal Virginia and Diversify Architecture. We visited the NEON district site of their program project and held an exchange of ideas session with Kailyn and Alyssa, allowing them to present their concept ideas and receive feedback. They accompanied us to multiple job sites and attended our weekly OAC meeting for the new Virginia MOCA museum, participated in in-studio meetings, and attended our first-ever all-staff virtual interview with a local school district. We look forward to following the careers of both of these brilliant, dedicated, and creative young women and hope to see them again soon.
Gather’s new location in Richmond’s West End is opening this spring! Gather locations offer dedicated desks, meeting rooms, and offices for rent in dynamic, inspiring, and colorful spaces. Gather also provides their members with podcast/media rooms, phone booths, communal kitchen spaces with local coffee brews and other refreshments, high-speed Internet, notary services, copiers, and printers. TMA has worked alongside @gatherrva and @campfireandco on projects in Norfolk and Virginia Beach, and we can’t wait to show you this one soon! Six months ago, we broke ground at our future home on the campus of Virginia Wesleyan University—today, we’re celebrating just how far it’s come! 🎉
What started as a vision and a blueprint is now taking shape into a space where our community can experience contemporary art in bigger and bolder ways for years to come. With our new home on track to open in spring 2026, we have a feeling the next year is going to fly by.
While construction continues, there’s still so much to look forward to at our current location. We have exciting exhibitions, programs, and events lined up through the end of 2025.
We’re grateful for everyone who’s been part of this journey so far. A special shout-out to @vawesleyan President Dr. Scott Miller and the entire VWU team for their enthusiasm and collaboration, to Michael Schnekser and the @tymoffmoss team for designing such a thoughtful, flexible space, and to @hourigangroup for bringing it all to life. We can’t wait to share what’s next.

Revealed at a recent Virginia Beach City Council meeting, we present a first rendering of the new Virginia Museum of Contemporary Arts (Virginia MOCA) on the campus of Virginia Wesleyan University. We couldn’t be more excited about the promise and possibilities of this probject. More to come. @virginiamoca@vawesleyan@visitvabeach@visitvirginia@vabeacharts
Happy Valentine’s Day! Today, February 14, is Tymoff+Moss Architects’ 29th anniversary. Throughout this coming year, ahead of our 30th anniversary, we’ll be sharing some memories and photos from our archives. TMA has been on the same cobblestoned block of Botetourt Street in Norfolk’s historic Freemason District for all 29 years of our practice. First, from 1995 to mid 2006, in the 500 block in the spaces now occupied by Cure NFK coffeehouse and Virginia Cheese Co. When a former gas station turned bar went up for sale across the street, we took the leap and purchased it. (More on that in an upcoming post!) We’ve been in this building ever since, and we look forward to the years to come at 512 Botetourt Street.
Some great local coverage today featuring the Brock Environmental Center and the Macon and Joan Brock Classroom, completed in 2021. The classroom building designed by TMA follows all the same sustainable energy principles used in the original building. A driving force behind all of our decisions was using high-performance building technologies that are accessible to average homeowners, so the classroom itself is a learning tool for architecture and design. The new classroom is home to the Virginia Beach City Public School’s Environmental Studies program, provides additional meeting/event space for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, and creates a model learning space for outdoor field education and partnerships across the country. Two TMA projects were recognized at the annual HRACRE Design Awards last week in Norfolk. Receiving Design Awards of Merit were the NATO Tower and Hill renovation at the Norfolk Botanical Garden and Norfolk’s newest public library, the Richard A. Tucker Memorial Library. We loved working on these projects and are proud they were recognized. #norfolkpubliclibrary #richardatuckermemoriallibrary #cityofnorfolk #norfolkva #norfolkbotanicalgarden #garden #natotower @norfolkbotanicalgarden@cityofnorfolkva
We had the pleasure of traveling to NYC with @creativeworklab & @steelcase to visit showrooms in the City.
Thank you both for organizing such a great experience🗽
Tymoff+Moss Architects is incredibly proud and grateful to be partnering with Virginia Wesleyan University (VWU), the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art (Virginia MOCA), and the Hourigan Group on the new home for MOCA. The new museum facility will be adjacent to the TMA-designed Susan S. Goode Fine and Performing Arts Center on the campus of Virginia Wesleyan University. We will share much more about this project in the coming months. We look forward to working with VWU, Virginia MOCA, Hourigan Group, and the rest of our team on this exciting and important endeavor.
