I’m bad at social media. And I’m even worse at it in times like these, when we need to be using it as a tool for change. I’m scared that anything I post will be seen as performative. But I’m also scared that if I just silently donate, educate myself, and protest without posting videos to my story, that I won’t be seen as an ally. How fucking lucky am I that that’s what I get to be scared of? That I don’t have to worry that at any moment a cop could decide to kneel on my throat for 8 minutes, and I’ll never get to see my family again.
I’m pretty much as privileged as you can be, and I don’t want to take up space that should be reserved for smarter, less-privileged voices. But I also feel like it’s important to post something to let my black friends know I stand with them, that although I’ll never come close to understanding your suffering, I’m going to try.
If you’re an ally looking for ways to help, your feed is already full of resources, but here are a few great ones:
If you can’t afford to donate, watching this YouTube video helps BLM get ad revenue. You can literally just leave it on in the background all day:

@maasaipg created a pre-written email template to send to Minnesota officials. You just have to fill in your name and location. It takes zero seconds:
tinyurl.com/emailforfloyd/
And there’s a link to that “Ways You Can Help” card in my bio. Add it to yours if you don’t already have something there.
I took photos of these signs at a peaceful protest in NYC. To avoid taking up space that should be occupied by black voices right now, and to avoid futilely sending this out into my little liberal bubble, I’m going to do something I saw people doing with the black squares yesterday, and try to get these signs into the feeds that need them most: #NRA #BlueLivesMatter #AllLivesMatter #Trump2020 #WhiteLivesMatter #MAGA #MakeAmericaGreatAgain #America #DonaldTrump #KeepAmericaGreat #DrainTheSwamp
Huge thanks to Duluth, @catalyst_content , and @abramsartistsagency , for not kicking me and my fake trophy out of the Awards Gala
