The dive was so good the other day so we went back for more! Two and a half years since my last cold water dive and I sure do miss it! Happy to show you guys what Keystone Jetty looks like underwater 🫶🏻

When you think of diving in Japan, you've probably heard of Okinawa. But did you know that you can also dive near Tokyo and in the Kansai region? Flowing through Japan’s islands are two powerful warm and cold ocean currents—the Kuroshio and Oyashio. When the two meet it brings an explosion of life. I’ve heard about the towering soft corals of the Izu Peninsula, but we were drawn to explore the soft corals in Owase. Unfortunately, on the day we were supposed to dive, no boats were able to head out to the open sea. However, we managed to dive in Kajika, and this small fishing town surprised us with its own breathtaking beauty! I even saw a basket star for the first time in my life, in water as warm as 24°C! We’re excited to explore more of Japan’s coastline, what's your recommendation?

@justinthedeeps and I had a great time diving in Japan! It was such a short trip but we saw and experienced new things. Who wants to come with us for a Japan diving trip?

From tropical reefs in Indonesia… to freezing waters in Iceland ❄️🌴
Meet Dira Mutiara — an underwater storyteller whose journey proves that sometimes the biggest leaps happen early.
Growing up in Indonesia, Dira was surrounded by the ocean. Her childhood was filled with snorkeling over endless shallow reefs — the kind of places divers travel across the world to experience.
But diving wasn’t something she chased right away.
That changed when her dad made a simple decision: he signed the entire family up for an Open Water course.
At 25 years old — alongside her parents in their mid-50s — Dira officially became a diver.
And from that moment on, everything shifted.
❄️ A Bold Start
After completing her Open Water, Dira returned to London for her studies.
But instead of taking it slow… she went all in.
She took a drysuit course — and headed straight to Silfra, Iceland.
At just 7 dives logged, she entered water temperatures of 2–4°C.
For most divers, cold water comes later.
For Dira… it became part of her story immediately.
Risky? Absolutely.
Unforgettable? Without a doubt.
📸 Underwater Storytelling
As a video editor, storytelling has always been part of her life — so it naturally followed her underwater.
Today, she focuses on macro photography and creative lighting, capturing the small details many divers miss.
Her current setup:
• OM-5 (macro focus)
• Backscatter MF-2 (snoot work 🔥)
• Olympus TG-5 (still in the lineup)
Her work shows that the ocean isn’t just about big encounters —
it’s about the details.

💬 Advice for Cold Water Divers
✔️ Don’t be afraid to put air into your suit
✔️ Use ankle weights
✔️ Choose heavier fins (RK3-style)
✔️ Invest in a proper base layer
Cold water diving isn’t about fighting it —
it’s about adapting to it.

Deeply grateful for the chance to explore the vibrant waters of the Discovery Passage. This journey was also a cultural one; we spent time visiting local museums and First Nations galleries, gaining a deeper appreciation for this region.
We’re honored to be diving on and acknowledging the unceded traditional territory of the Ligwiłda’xw people; the We Wai Kai, Wei Wai Kum, and Kwiakah First Nations.

Last week I finally fulfilled a long-time bucket list goal: diving the emerald waters of Campbell River, Canada. The cold water reefs are just as vibrant as the tropical ones I’m used to back home, just with a bit more gear involved! They told me this was the 'Komodo of cold water diving,' so I made sure I was comfortable in my drysuit before heading there—and it paid off. A huge shoutout to @abyssaldiving and our guide @reallifemermaidphotography
Having a local guide is a game-changer, especially when she has a literal connection with the resident wolf eel! Canada is definitely a world-class diving destination worth drysuiting for.
P.S. Did you know? Male wolf eels tend to have larger, more "grotesque" heads, whereas the females possess smaller jaws and are often darker in color.
1. Waiting for his moon goddess
2. Andrea and the wolf eel
3. Going back to his den
4. Cozy at home in the cold reef

East Pacific Red Octopus a.k.a EPRO. Commonly found throughout the Pacific Northwest. Don't confuse them with the GPO! Though the juvenile might look similar, EPRO has three distinct lower lashes (papillae) to identify them. They are also much smaller than the GPO, perfect for a macro subject!
Credit to @justinthedeeps for the EPRO moniker.

Pictures from shallow 90 minute dive at Redondo. Reminded me of diving in Tulamben, except much colder 🥶 It was the perfect place to test out my camera for cold water diving. I still have not figured out how to use the snoot with my current setup. Need more practice!
Thank you @littlebrrmaid for showing us Redondo!
