The May SBC is gonna be great with charter member Maurice Tani and returning Sad Bastard Roger Kunkel making it happen. The show starts on time, and ends early enough for you to catch an episode of “the end of democracy” on the 10 o’clock news. The show is free, so why not treat yourself to some music!!

Super psyched for this show. Appearances by Wreckless Eric on these shores are vanishingly rare, so don’t miss this one at The MakeOut Room on Thursday May 7th. This is an early show, so don’t show up at 9:30 while cables are getting wrapped and the disco-flip is starting…

So... I'm hearing that there are just 15 tickets left for Rain Parade and yours truly at Wild Honey Backyard on Sunday afternoon, May 17. I have the honor of fronting an all-star band featuring twangmeister Tom Heyman on guitar and pedal steel, the fuzzilicious Kirk Swan also on guitar, Rob Douglas holding down the bottom on bass, and the mighty Sebastian Aymanns on drums. Please come on down and help me celebrate the release of my new album STRAY on Flat Iron Recordings. /e/rain-parade-with-special-guest-russ-tolman-tickets-1982053805287

Motel Blues Again—Mission Edition: it’s the late great Magic Sam’s birthday. West Side Soul remains a top 10 blues record for me. Here is a repost of a swipe at his seminal boogie “Looking Good”. RC Davis Rite Spot, Peavey T-60…hat by fake Burberry

Closing out the shortest month of the year with first time Sad Bastard Lydia Walker, who will be accompanied by the inimitable Josh Miller, and charter member Jill Olson. The show starts on time, ends early enough to catch an episode of Ironsides, and is as always... FREE

Motel Blues Again—Mission Edition: Here is a slow take on the classic fiddle tune “Arkansas Traveler”. I am playing this on an incredible DiPinto Bacchus. My guitar nerd friends probably all know of Philadelphia based DiPinto guitars through their long association with the great surf band (and Nick Lowe backing band) Los Straitjackets. The Bacchus is rare, completely hollow model, somewhat as if a Gibson ES-330 had a single cutaway and humbucking pickups. If any of my Bay Area pals are interested, I am going to be selling this one, so drop me a line.

Whirlwind trip to New Jersey to see my 91 year old Dad and 89 year old Mom. I am very lucky, as they have it all together mentally, and are still getting around ( slowly and carefully) physically. I capped it off by seeing the great Richard Lloyd at Union Pool. A really nice mix of solo material and a handful of Television songs including this one from “ Adventure “. It was bracing. Loud and his band was great.

Motel Blues Again—Mission Edition: Here is a shuffle in the key of C for “Cold” which is what I am about to be when fly back East to visit my folks in The Garden State on Sunday. It feels important to touch base with family during these incredibly uncertain times, and I am lucky to be able to do so. I am always trying to apply the bender in slightly more pentatonic ways when I deploy it. As soon as I got done filming this, I gave the guitar one more pull and snapped that B string….Hope you dig. 90’ Fender Paisley reissue, Joe Glaser Bender, Lindy Fralin Split Rail pickups, RC Davis Rite Spot.
