This year, 60,000 transport workers across road and aviation are bargaining together for the first time to lift standards across the industry - with drivers at Team Global Express gearing up.
Today, TWU National Secretary Michael Kaine and National Assistant Secretary Emily McMillan spoke with the TGE bargaining team about our 2026 plan. By aligning with 220+ agreements, we’re in the strongest position to lift conditions industry‑wide.
Today NSW Secretary Richard Olsen, National Assistant Secretary Emily McMillan, and Sydney & Central West Sub-branch Secretary Rob Rasmussen joined TWU Officials, Workers, members from across the union movement as well as local State Members and Councillors at @blacktowncitycouncil ’s event to commemorate those who have lost their lives at work for today’s International Day of Mourning.
Transport remains Australia’s most dangerous industry. Today, Richard Olsen spoke to those in attendance about the very real risks Workers are facing every day - mentioning waste management giant Cleanaway as an employer with a particularly bad track record in recent times. Five deaths in less than two years is NOT normal, and is never acceptable.
Safety at work is not negotiable, it is essential.
Five deaths in two years.
Today, on International Workers' Memorial Day, TWU officials laid flowers at the Rochedale Landfill to commemorate the lives lost at Cleanaway sites across Australia.
Despite these tragedies, Cleanaway CEO Mark Schubert took home a whopping $4.2 million last financial year.
Today we remember the workers killed at Cleanaway, and we think of their families and their communities. But we are also sending a message loud and clear: if Cleanaway refuses to lift safety and standards around the country, we will force it to.
Tomorrow, on worker’s Memorial Day, we’re taking action at Cleanaway sites across the country in memory of the workers killed on the jobs that were meant to keep them safe.
Waste management giant Cleanaway - contracted by many of our councils - has a deplorable track record for poor workplace safety. Five deaths in less than two years is NEVER normal.
Meanwhile, the CEO pocketed $4.2M in the last financial year - despite 40% of shareholders voting against executive pay over “lack of appropriate accountability” over safety.
