Possibly the most beautiful chair I’ve ever had the fortune to own ! An exceptionally rare bentwood occasional chair by Thonet. Documented in the 1888 Thonet catalogue, the chair was the result of experimentation of steaming and glueing veneer boards before shaping and cutting them to create the interlocking back. The method was deemed too tricky and costly for large scale production and the chair never went into full manufacturing with only a small handful of models ever made. Open intertwined stained beechwood with gilded outlines and a central finial. C1888, Vienna. Now sold.

Masterpiece! An exceptional and rare ‘Viking Revival’ Arts and Crafts Throne by Lars Kinsarvik (1846-1925). Fairytale as chair. This museum quality work was carved shortly after Norway gained independence from Sweden, recalling medieval carvings and Norse mythology with its dragons, kings and trolls set among interlacing scrolls and tendrils. Kinsarvik was a pioneering Norwegian woodcarver and designer, known for his role in developing the “Dragon Style” which drew on Viking and medieval ornament. Comparable Kinsarvik works can be found in the Art Institute of Chicago, Musée d’Orsay Paris, The V&A and the Louvre Abu Dhabi. C1908, Norway. Now sold.

Dove of Peace by Pablo Picasso (1881 - 1973). A remarkable and rare cut out dove formed out of the back of a cigarette packet and gifted to French politician and resistance fighter, Laurent Casanova. Picasso’s dove emerged as one of the most enduring images of peace in modern art. In 1949, as Europe still bore the scars of war and the shadow of the Cold War lengthened across the continent, Picasso was invited to create an image for the First International Peace Congress in Paris. He turned to a white dove, rendered with restraint, tenderness and simplicity. The dove was immediately embraced beyond the confines of the art world, circulating across borders and languages, becoming a shared visual prayer for peace. Accompanied with full provenance and authentication from the Picasso committee. 🕊️

Opening on Tuesday morning ! Featured here a preliminary sketch for ‘Figure Plan 1’ by Oskar Schlemmer (1888 - 1943). C1919, Germany. Painter, sculptor, choreographer and key figure of the Bauhaus, Oskar Schlemmer was one of the most important artists of the early 20th Century. He was appointed by Walter Gropius as Master to the Bauhaus in Weimar and Dessau. It was here that his work redefined the relationship between the human body, geometry, and space. Schlemmer reduced the human figure to abstract, architectural forms that emphasized proportion, movement, and spatial harmony over individual expression. On display at stand D16.
