Tiago, who goes by TW Jonas online, traces his photographic sensibility back to Salvador, the coastal city in northeastern Brazil where he was born. “Salvador is full of contradictions…yet it is also a city of immense cultural vitality—music, food, literature, and cinema thriving against that tension.”
Reflecting on his photographic journey, he says, “Photography was an irrational passion that turned into a solid love affair. And as happens in any long-term relationship, interest, dedication, and enthusiasm ebb and flow. It’s a roller coaster. And that’s okay. Sometimes I need to step away from photography, study other things, so I can come back with a clear head and, maybe, if I’m lucky, with fresh ideas."
“When it comes to photography, perfection and correctness don’t lead to epiphany; it’s error, flaw, and failure that do…The moment the photographer ceases to be captivated by the image and shifts to technical obsession, photography is murdered (by boredom). Undoubtedly, learning the technique has its importance, but I believe it is the idea made into an image — its power — that should be appreciated.”
“Honestly, I don’t think I’ve found a style yet. But I keep wandering the streets, trying to make the ordinary extraordinary. And I also keep trying to understand my limitations and, in a way, trying to embrace and accept them. In that sense, all subjects interest me,”
