Turtle conservation edition
*lessons on conservation in Costa Rica聽
1. Conservation efforts are really hard. When the young people of Playa San Miguel started their conservation efforts of sea turtles working to change the culture of consuming turtle eggs around 1995 they faced a lot of backlash. Change is hard but not impossible.聽
2. Change is possible. Today that community of San Miguel works alongside the organization @turtle_trax helping with night patrols and reporting any turtles laying eggs so they can be protected.
3. Patience is the name of the game. Patiently patrolling the beaches looking out for turtles, taking care of the hatcheries and accepting that nature (dogs, raccoons, iguanas, etc)聽 itself might interfere with your best efforts is all part of the conservation process. But patient perseverance is key.
4. Protecting nature should be part of every nation's identity. Being proud of the beauty found in Costa Rica creates a culture, from a young age, to love and protect nature.聽
5. Nature knows exactly what to do to survive. Humans are animals that seem to have become disconnected from our true nature, and therefore we have lost that knowledge. Watching the sea turtle finding her spot on the beach and laying her eggs it was obvious she was following an ancient primal instinct. She knew exactly what to do. It's time people connected to these instincts.
6. Education is everything: learning about how disruptive bright lights and loud sounds are for the turtle laying process, made me sad about all the beach bars, hotels, and houses that have encroached on this important process. It's time to reconsider our unnecessary fireworks, lights, and sounds at the beach that put turtles in danger.
A few pictures from our Turtles II crew as they celebrate Guanacaste Day at a local school, repair nets used in the hatcheries, help with and enjoy their sunset leadership circles.

The Turtles I crew has been busy building hatcheries, visiting the local supermarket, learning how to cook Costa Rican meals with Dokay Tours, and enjoying sunsets. The highlight of the day was learning about the origins of Turtle Trax and being inspired by their team. @turtle_trax

We kickstarted 2025 working at the local community park in San Francisco de Coyote. Our volunteers had a great time painting the play ground and tables in the park, collaborating with the local community leaders to have a safer and more enjoyable space.
