Here’s a look back at “A Musical Hortus Malabaricus”, a performance held at the Pavilion on 16th January, where music, images, and words came together to pay homage to the 400-year-old Hortus Malabaricus text. Blending Western jazz and Indian classical music, the performance transformed history into a living, immersive experience.

When a historic book begins to sing. 🌿🎶
A Musical Hortus Malabaricus reimagines the iconic seventeenth-century encyclopaedia as a live, multisensory performance where sound, image and storytelling unfold together.
Music, spoken word and projected visuals trace the layered histories of the Hortus Malabaricus, bringing botanical illustrations, multilingual texts and centuries-old knowledge into the present. Performed by an ensemble of acclaimed Dutch and Indian musicians, the work bridges Western jazz and Indian musical traditions, creating space for improvisation, dialogue and discovery.
This performance revives the spirit of intercultural collaboration that shaped the original volumes and transforms a historical archive into a contemporary artistic experience.
Supported by the Embassy and Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
