WATER & WHEAT 🌾 - Part 7:
Our San Luis Valley economy relies on our agriculture. More than half of our population is either directly or indirectly supported with the resources generated by the efforts of our farmers; resources which support our infrastructure, from schools to hospitals and everything in between.
As we described in parts 1-6 of “Water & Wheat,” we are in the throes of unavoidable change. The anxiety and fear this generates make it tempting to cast blame, and often the finger is wagged at our farmers for using too much water, not transitioning to lower water use crops, or other actions. But implementing such change is not such a simple choice for them, in fact it is a VERY consequential gamble: invest in new planting/harvest equipment; manage new weeds, pests, and unfamiliar growing cycles; all to produce a crop which may not have an established market (buyers). Without reliable income so our farms can survive, jobs and therefore our regional economy are hard sustain.
There are other (potential) land-use options such as preservation efforts, revegetation for grazing, or fallowing, but none will readily replace the jobs lost should our economy begin to crumble. But could there be another path which may help offset job-loss as some farms inevitably retire? A path which will build or expand the market for low-water-use, climate-smart crops such as dry beans, millet, quinoa, ancient grains, and the beautiful cover crop, rye?
In the coming posts we will begin to share the behind-the-scenes work that our Tumbleweed Team has been doing for years, recent awards in support of such work, and, for the first time, publicly unveil what we are creating to do our part to support a climate-smart, water-intelligent future for our agriculturally-driven San Luis Valley home.

Tumbleweed Bread came on Tuesday with their delicious bread. Their special of the week is Honey Oat, and their sweets were Brownie drops and Oat Rye cookies. 🍪 😋
Snakes and Cakes is back in full force, so check out their gluten-free options, including their artisan loaf, sandwich bread, hamburger buns, and dinner rolls to enhance your meals; different mini blue corn breads and zucchini loaves; a variety of delicious cookies, hand pies, and his own spin on a GF frosted tart!
We restocked multiple local honeys 🍯🍯 from Haeffelis Honey in Del Norte, Gary Bee Guy in Alamosa, and Westcliff Honey from Westcliff Co., along with a few infused ones: lemon, raspberry, and elderberry. 🍋
Ecozoica Apothecary restocked some of her items. Her Dragon Balm 🐉 is back in stock while it lasts, amazing for muscle and joint pain. Her SANGEE SOL sun protection stick is just in time for our long days in the sun again paired well with her FIRST PLANT RESPONDER after bite and liniment roller for those itchy bug bites 🦟
