This Mothersâ Day TARC is highlighting our records on Lois Gibbs, the Love Canal disaster, and the Center for Environment, Health, and Justice. When Gibbs and her neighbors, many of them self-proclaimed âhousewivesâ or stay-at-home moms, noticed a pattern of health issues in their families, they banded together to investigate and seek help. This led to a legal battle where the Love Canal neighborhood took on big chemical companies and the U.S. government, eventually sparking the passage of the Superfund Act. For her work, Gibbs earned the nickname âMother of the Superfund.â
