When asked what made her choose PT over other healthcare fields, she said: “I love the philosophy of helping someone heal using their own body. Also, I love analyzing movement and using that information to teach patients about their bodies and what they can do to improve their quality of life. I love connecting with people and seeing someone through their entire journey of recovery. That is truly rewarding to me.”

What does it take to perform at the highest level, night after night? For elite artists, it’s more than talent—it’s resilience, discipline, and caring for a body pushed to its limits.
Stevie Oakes knows this firsthand. A former professional dancer, she’s now a Doctor of Physical Therapy student focused on helping performers stay strong, healthy, and stage-ready.
Through her clinical training in the Tufts DPT-Seattle program, she’s worked with musicians at a world-renowned conservatory and is preparing to support Broadway performers backstage, where the physical demands are constant and there’s no true “off season.”
Her approach isn’t about doing less. It’s about performing sustainably through injury prevention, strength, and smarter movement.
“I’m not interested in changing the art,” she says. “The physical therapy has to meet the art.”
Because when performance is part of your identity, taking care of your body isn’t optional. It’s essential.
