Jesus was a refugee — what the nativity really teaches about immigration and borders
Salvation comes through Jesus as an immigrant. And if you notice this very carefully, God does not protect Jesus by sending in angels and armies. God protects Jesus by saying, flee, get away. God does not prevent this violence. Instead, God chooses a path of escape, immigration, refugee. God enters into this world As an immigrant family.
The good news is, it's not that God keeps us safe in this messy world. The good news is that God enters into that mess too. Because God became flesh and a refugee. God knows exile from the inside. God knows the story of fear and fighting and grief and survival. See, God brings salvation to the entire world. See, this story that we read is not some love story wrapped in tinsel and everything is Good and great. It's a very harsh love story that we suddenly start to understand that the term love wins is forged in danger. But it proclaims the truth that no border can stop God's love, no tyrant can kill God's
