Tor Simen Ulstein: The Atlantic Wall
“Photographs of past and future time” is a photographic project that portrays the monumental bunkers along Europe’s coastline. They were built by Hitler’s regime during the Second World War as protection against an Allied invasion, and today they are left to the inevitable forces of nature.
Drawing on his own childhood memories from holidays along the Danish beaches, the artist explores the bunkers’ mystique, their brutal and timeless aesthetic, and their historical significance, as structures caught between human creative power and nature’s slow dissolution.
The project follows a journey along the entire Atlantic Wall, a 2,685-kilometre-long defensive system stretching from Kirkenes in the north to the French–Spanish border in the south, consisting of approximately 6,000 bunkers.
The complex was constructed by the German Todt Organization under the leadership of Minister of Armaments and chief architect Albert Speer.
Today, the bunkers stand not only as remnants of another era, but also as mirrors reflecting the political and social tensions of our own time.
The project explores how the bunkers, even as abandoned structures, continue to carry a strong presence in the landscape.
They function as memories of war, but also as symbols of something unresolved in our own time. Through photographs of the meeting between sea and land, where erosion gradually eats its way into the coastline, it becomes visible how these foundationless concrete structures are slowly displaced, scattered across nature’s restless borderland.

The exhibition presents an interplay between artists of two generations and two different modes of expression (photography and sculpture).
Tor Simen Ulstein with “Atlanterhavsvollen” and Gunn Harbitz with “De høyeste fjellene er under havet”. In the exhibition, their perspectives on nature, stone, decay, and a new beginning are woven together.
A fascinating, quiet force emerges, one that stirs the viewer deep within the soul. Nature reveals itself in a unique interplay in which decay, weathering, and the melting of earth provide nourishment and bear witness to new growth.
