This piece isn’t just the latest from my studio. It is me sharing more of my story.
I pay homage to Michael Jordan‘s college years in this mixed media collage work. My sister went to the University of North Carolina and for many years, I wanted to go there and play soccer. I even went to the soccer camps in the summer for a few years and loved being coached by the soccer players and the UNC staff. I saw myself there.
It was my dream school, but when it came time for college applications I didn’t even apply.
Why?
Because I didn’t think I was good enough.
I often wonder what would’ve happened if I had done like MJ and just went for it anyway. So while this piece does honor Michael Jordan‘s collegiate legacy, it’s also a reminder to myself that even now when I have a dream, when I have a feeling, when I have an inkling towards something, I just need to go for it and leave my footprints in the sky.
“I’ll leave my footprints in the sky (Hoop dreams never die, No. 2)”

Have you heard of Oak Bluffs?
Oak Bluffs, a picturesque town on Martha’s Vineyard, has been a cherished summer haven for generations of the Black elite and middle class. Here’s a glimpse into its storied history:
In 1912, Charles Shearer opened the first Black-owned inn, the Shearer Cottage, catering to affluent Black families at a time of widespread discrimination. This paved the way for Oak Bluffs to become a summer mecca, attracting luminaries of the Harlem Renaissance like Dorothy West, Adam Clayton Powell Jr., and artists like Paul Robeson, other folks like the Obamas and Oprah, and even some of my friends.
I made this piece imagining a golf club that was made just for folks at Oak Bluffs. This fella was prominent in my mind, although I imagine people of all genders tearing up the greens, reveling in the freedom they found there.
“Meet me at the Club”
Painted paper collage and wax pastel on 22x30” Arches watercolor paper.
I truly loved making this.
My largest commission to date is done.
She was a joy to create! Truly grateful to the collector and my team @artehausstudios for helping make this vision come to life. This one was inspired by one of my small drawings from a few years ago.
“She found herself in the blooms”

Work in progress. Looking forward to weaving the strings on the tennis racket.
And I choose those books on the table for a reason. This piece isn’t just about diving into a new sport. It’s also the beginning of a deep dive into Black placemaking and our spaces. I’d love to hear your thoughts and responses to this piece so far.

Words guiding my work now.
Just got these two from @rayoandhoney . Both phrases resonate with me deeply in this moment, so I had to get both.
Now comes the big choice of where they are going: in my work office or in my art studio!
