I started this piece in July 2024 and finished it in August of 2025. Many many hours of dedication, using fine liner pens, really getting absorbed in the small details of the textures of feather and fur. Over 30 different animals represented here from Frog to Polar Bear, the image shows all these creatures facing towards a guiding star. At first when I started this drawing I was considering calling it “Stampede” although that had never quite felt right. Something about a stampede was too chaotic, carrying the energy perhaps of a herd running away from something dangerous. I shared the in progress work with a close friend who has a knack for seeing deeply into things and he immediately pointed out how all the animals were unified in their direction, and so that’s how it got its name.
It was suggested to me by another friend to start exploring gold leaf as a medium and it’s been really fun. The gold leaf is super delicate and takes patience to lay it exactly how I’d like it. There is a special brush made from Squirrel hair that helps pick up the leaf using static electricity absorbed from the back of my hand. It’s all pretty fascinating!
