Somatic Summits Ep 1 - “Enter the Glen”
I’ve been developing new group creative experiences, and this is the first prototype of codename “Movement Hike” (still working on the name).
Concept is simple:
1. Pick an inspiring natural environment / trail.
2. Gather 4-8 people for a 2 hour hike.
3. During the hike, tune into the space, and the people around you. Move, dance, and flow around as inspired by your surroundings.
4. One person records what they see with a camera, from their unique perspective. Switch who has the camera throughout.
5. Edit together the footage as a group to capture the essence of the experience.
Inspiration from the experience came from doing outdoor events over the years (noticing how the unique energies of the environment shape how people feel and interact), and from learning about improvisational choreography while I was in New York last year. I met a professional dancer named Rebecca, who told me of a collaboration she did as a choreographer with the architect of Japanese botanical gardens. They together explored the intention and energies of specific sites, and Rebecca developed a variety of improvisational scores for her dancers to take the unique qualities of the spaces into their bodies to create movement. Needless to say, I started doing them almost everywhere I go.
A few examples include:
1. Tracing the lines and contours of the space with different parts of your body (fingers, eyes, knee), one at a time, then layering them together
2. Listening to the natural sounds of a space, finding the inner rhythm, and moving from it
3. Notice the 3D nature of the space, and explore the relationship of your body to it as you move through
4. Notice the visual textures of the space, and explore how those can be expressed through your body
If you have any others you do, or ideas to try, let me know!
Shout out to
