I finally get to share with you my set from the Phoenix Poetic Showcase 🌷 hosted by @skinnyblksean with the amazing lineup of @jadareneeholy@oldman.ra@gorgeousjefe 💫
I guess I’ll take some space up in these captions to share about each piece. This was my opening piece — trying out my shaker for the first time. I wrote “if I said what I please” sitting in @mattysteinkamp studio. It’s about the struggle to get the words out, which is a struggle I face pretty much every waking day. Ironic for a poet, sure (I don’t make the rules). Sometimes it’s caused by my own anxiety, sometimes it’s caused by those around me, when I find myself digging for something to say. When that happens, I always tell myself that it’s probably my ancestors protecting me from someone. Otherwise, I can’t rationalize this “thing” I do, or what I’ll call being a “chronic listener”. Everyday I learn more about the dualities of presenting myself in a bold way but shriveling in most other ways when it’s not related to making art. This poem is a challenge to myself to take up space and… say what I please.

Hi friends, my mom is undergoing an invasive spinal surgery on December 29th and we need your help to covert the healthcare costs.
This year has been especially hard, between balancing finances and healthcare costs. She is now facing her second major surgery in just a few months, all while battling multiple autoimmune diseases: Hashimoto’s, A-HUS, and a spinal cord disease. The recovery will require her to be out of work for at least eight weeks, and unfortunately, she will not receive any pay during this time. The financial strain of doctor co-pays, medications, food, and daily expenses is overwhelming, especially as she focuses on healing and regaining her strength during rehabilitation.

What’s it like to be in a flow state? It’s duality. It’s confidence. When Eboni and I first sat down to dream up what we were going to do, we didn’t call it that. But looking back, I think what felt like an attempt to be raw in this skin— was really a quiet, burning need to prove to myself that I am duality. That I can be soft and sharp. Grounded and uncontainable. I can move with intention and still let instinct lead. I can be cute and sexy, weird and shy. That’s the flow.
