This Mother’s Day, WHAI would like to acknowledge and honour the mothers, pregnant people, and parents who use drugs and have been burdened by stigma, surveillance, and discrimination. Fatal and non-fatal drug toxicity ratios are at a crisis point among those who are pregnant and newly parenting in Ontario, and people have reported experiences of child apprehension system surveillance, barriers to overdose prevention and harm reduction services, and fragmented opioid and pregnancy care. Amongst increasing restrictions to harm reduction services, it’s imperative that we consider pregnant and parenting people in bridging the gaps in services. To learn more about opioid toxicity and pregnancy, read the Pregnancy, Opioid Toxicity & Death factsheet at whai.ca/resources.

Happy (belated) Volunteer Day! It was a busy time at Trellis as we hosted a special volunteers brunch to thank those that selflessly dedicate their time to help others. You are so appreciated, thank you for your continued work and support! We couldn't do what we do without our community getting involved and making things happen.

You’re the friend who always looks out for people at parties. You’re the guy who quit crystal but still shows up for others trying to stop. You’re the one who saw the lack of info and made a zine or shared safer use tips. You’re one of the unacknowledged experts—an informal counsellor, a quiet leader, someone who makes a difference without asking for credit. However crystal has shown up in your life, you’ve turned your experience into something meaningful. And we need your voice. We’re bringing together 2SGBTQ+ guys from across Ontario to shape how prevention, harm reduction, and treatment for crystal meth actually work for our community. You don’t need a degree—just lived or living experience, a connection to the 2SGBTQ+ community, and a desire to make things better. You’ll help shape real programs and policies, and you’ll be compensated for your time and expertise. If you want to learn more, follow the link in our bio.

Sexual health includes butt health🍑 HPV is a very common virus that is mostly spread through sexual activity, and it often has no symptoms. Some “high-risk” types of HPV can lead to cancers over time, including anal cancer (as well as cervical, vaginal, vulvar, penile, and mouth/throat cancers). For women and gender-diverse people, living with HIV can increase the risk of HPV-related anal cancer because HIV can weaken the immune system. Screening can help catch changes early. You can contact local Preventive Care Screening Program at @kingstoncommunityhealthcentres : ☎️ 613 542 6793 📩 [email protected] If this is relevant for you or someone you care about: - Talk to a healthcare provider about anal cancer screening - Share resources if a provider is unfamiliar with guidelines - Pass this info along. It can help someone get care sooner #HPV #HIV #AnalCancerAwareness #CancerPrevention SexualHealth

March 8th is International Women’s Day! Today we want to encourage service providers, community and healthcare organizations to #GainToGive by increasing their awareness of and capacity to discuss women’s HIV prevention options to support women’s sexual health and autonomy. As we celebrate women, we also want to acknowledge the importance of moving beyond the binary and supporting HIV prevention for gender-diverse people. WHAI’s resource, HIV Prevention Medications pocketbook, is intended for cis and Trans women to increase their awareness of the PrEP, PEP, and PIP to help foster sexual health autonomy. Cis and Trans women’s HIV risk is often unrecognized and overlooked, leading to a lack of awareness, less resources, and stigma surrounding discussions about HIV prevention and care. The resource can be found at whai.ca/resources or in the link in our bio. #IWD #InternationalWomensDay
