Legal Observation Training with Eddie Phanichkul
Eddie Phanichkul is an entrepreneur, founder of medical protection device company VIDA, and a trained legal observer - a role which documents interactions between law enforcement and citizens. With ICE deployments in Minneapolis and the use of lethal militarized force against civilians, we explore legal observation as a way to push back.

Gene Roddenberry believed in a future where no one is made to feel like they don’t belong. 🖖🏽
To celebrate the 60th anniversary of Star Trek, we’re looking back at our favorite Trek moments that helped create a better future in the real world.
In 1968, a young biracial girl wrote to FaVE! magazine, addressing her letter to Mr. Spock because she saw in him someone who understood what it felt like to exist between two worlds.
“I know that you are half Vulcan and half human and you have suffered because of this,” the girl wrote. “My mother is Negro and my father is white and I am told this makes me a half-breed...I guess I’ll never have any friends.”
Leonard Nimoy, touched by this letter, wrote an equally moving response:
“Spock learned he could save himself from letting prejudice get him down. He could do this by really understanding himself and knowing his own value as a person. He found he was equal to anyone who might try to put him down–equal in his own unique way. You can do this too, if you realize the difference between popularity and true greatness. It has been said that ‘popularity’ is merely the crumbs of greatness.”

For International Women's Day I wanted to share this video from Esther Kanu, Founder of the Women in Action Development Project School in Sierra Leone.
Women in Action provides not just education opportunities but a safe community for vulnerable women and children in Sierra Leone. I've known Esther since 2004. Over that time she has been a constant inspiration to me in her efforts as a community builder, non-profit leader, and educator.
Over the past 3 years, the Star Trek community has helped keep the doors of this school open including a fundraiser this past December which was funded largely in part by Trek fans. Esther recently shared a thank you video citing the Trek fandom by name for this past December's fundraising. Thank you all for continuing to support Esther, Women in Action, and opportunities for women in one of the most difficult places in the world to live.

Throughout Women’s History Month, we’ll be sharing stories about the visionary women in the arts and sciences who have inspired us to imagine and create a better future.
Known for her legendary contributions to science fiction, Ursula K. LeGuin was one of the greatest writers of her generation. She used sci-fi and speculative fiction as tools to examine the great problems of our time, from climate change and environmental stewardship to authoritarianism and social class.
In 1994, Le Guin reflected on Gene Roddenberry’s legacy and optimistic vision of the future as imagined through Star Trek: The Next Generation: “This is what science fiction does best. It challenges our idea of what we see as like ourselves. It increases our sense of kinship.”
Happy Women’s History Month!
