Introducing BTP.mp4, a new screening series about tech and poetics hosted in Greater Boston. We’re kicking things off with the god particle of film sci-fi. Fritz Lang’s Metropolis (1927) is set in the distant future of 2026: a world of oppressed workers, detached elites, mad scientists, and femme-coded robots. It demands the viewer Think About Things — something Weimar Germany famously Did Not Do!
It’s been 99 years since Metropolis was released, and the visual effects hold up just as well as the overtly political messaging. It’s a technical feat, it’s a thrilling masterpiece, it’s socialist propaganda. On Wednesday, join us in watching a techno-dystopia eat itself.
