Civil rights activists like Ida B. Wells played a pivotal role in shaping early anti-sexual violence movements in North America, drawing connections between anti-Black racism and sexual violence. Today, the fight for racial justice and freedom from sexual violence continues - and we’re deeply grateful for the foundational work of activists like Wells who helped pave the way forward.

Next up in our pets of TRCCMWAR feature is Betty! Betty is a leopard gecko and a Toronto born and raised baddie. She was pregnant when she first arrived to her home, so she’s deeply attuned to the importance of consent and bodily autonomy. She enjoys eating worms, climbing around her enclosure, and taking restorative naps. She’s obviously a little different, but she wears her difference as a reminder that all creatures, no matter how unusual, demand and deserve respect. And even though she’s a reptile, she makes her boundaries - and they’re not up for debate - very clear. Pets play a very important role in many of our collective members’ lives, and we’ve loved giving some of them the spotlight with our pets of TRCCMWAR feature! If you’re a collective member who’d like your pet featured, send us a DM!

This National Volunteer Week, we want to shoutout our incredible volunteers! Our collective of volunteers are the backbone of TRCCMWAR. From our front desk, to our crisis line, to our social media, you’ll find volunteers behind so much of what we do. We extend our sincerest gratitude to each and every TRCCMWAR volunteer for your commitment to TRCCMWAR and to supporting survivors. We appreciate you!

Supporting survivors means supporting harm reduction. The correlation between intimate partner violence (IPV) and substance use among survivors is well-established, yet people who use drugs face increased barriers to accessing support. People who use drugs can be denied access to shelters, putting them at risk of increased violence - a risk that is heightened for women and gender-diverse people. They face high rates of stigma, both from people and institutions, which can deter them from seeking support and health care. At TRCCMWAR, we believe that people who use drugs deserve safety and dignity, and that harm reduction saves lives and increases safety for everyone. Our 24/7 crisis line is always available to all survivors, including those who use substances: 416-597-8808

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, an annual campaign that sprung out of the first Take Back the Night (TBTN) marches in the 70s. Today, TRCCMWAR continues to do our part to raise awareness about sexual assault, including through our TBTN marches. Take a look through some of the art and posters from past TBTNs - and share any memories you might have of marches you’ve attended with us!

Up next in our TRCCMWAR community pet spotlight is Gus! Gus is a Manitoba farm dog turned city boy. He loves barking, singing, doing tricks in exchange for treats, and giving consensual kisses. Speaking of consent, Gus recognizes that consent is continuous, freely given, and can be revoked at any time. Gus is a believer in and supporter of bodily autonomy, sexual assault prevention, and TRCCMWAR. ❤️ Pets play a vital role in many survivors’ healing journeys and lives, and we’re very grateful to have so many adorable furry friends among our collective!
