Adventure racing: an excuse to play in the woods while doing something really hard.

Milestone achievement ‼️ It’s been a week since I finished my first marathon, and I’m still living in the afterglow of the moment. A few takeaways:
1. Hard is the same for everyone, no matter if it’s 1 mile or 26, slow or fast. I saw the same grit and determination on everyone’s face that day, regardless of when they finished. I am humbled to be among their ranks.
2. This was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, not so much because of the distance, but because of the 40 mile an hour winds gusting in my face the second half. But I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I know it made me stronger.
3. The people made the experience. The support from @sarahschulte129 and my friendships with RunTok runners (@strugglesandsquats plus many new ones!) made the race mean something beyond myself. I am so grateful.
4. Yes, I will be doing another one 😛
Third adventure race in the books! The nine hour Wild Driftless race in northern Iowa turned out to be better than I expected! We bushwhacked through riverbanks and over rocky, forested ridges with only a map and a compass to guide our way. We biked and rappelled and canoed, and we did it all with a lot of success and team spirit! I think it’s safe to say this is something I’ll enjoy doing for a long long time.

It’s hard to describe what finishing my first triathlon means. So I’ll do it by counting to three:
1️⃣ new discipline, swimming, learned … but far from mastered. I’m still not what I would consider a strong swimmer, and open water swimming is an entirely different beast from the pool at the YMCA, but I didn’t drown, and that was my main measure of success. Only upward from here!
2️⃣ of the best supporters I could ask, @sarahschulte129 and @snap_krekel_pop . Thanks for cheering me on and giving me the boost of energy I needed. Sarah, thanks for always encouraging me, in training and in races and in life. I Love you. Brandon, thanks for always showing up. You’re the real deal.
3️⃣ top-notch race buddies, @ben10hermann , @madisonperry98 and @braden_mosley . You guys inspire me every day, and I couldn’t ask for better friends to do crazy things with. You keep me honest and you push me. Life is better, fuller, with you in my life.
Best race crew there is 🏁 😎 I ran my second half marathon this weekend and crushed my PR by six minutes! Even more special? @sarahschulte129 and @rachel.langlois joined me by doing the 5K! Oh, and Ollie, of course! Talk about a great time :)
