OUR COMMUNITY NEEDS YOU! Hurricane Melissa has devastated communities across Jamaica, and once again, trans and queer Jamaicans will be left behind. Many of our trans community members have lost their homes, belongings, and livelihoods, and are facing the storm’s aftermath without access to national relief efforts. TransWave Jamaica is mobilizing to fill that gap. Your donations will help us provide emergency support to those displaced and at risk. Please support our efforts by donating via Rustin Fund or PayPal to help us meet urgent community needs.

A recent video circulating online by @msrumble_ has sparked conversation after asking Jamaican parents how they would react if their child told them they were gay. While the video sheds light on the reality of how many Jamaicans still respond to conversations around sexuality and gender identity, it also highlights how normalized abusive, hostile, and harmful ways of thinking have become in our society. For many LGBTQ+ people, especially trans and gender non-conforming Jamaicans, these reactions are not simply “opinions.” They can translate into rejection, homelessness, violence, emotional abuse, isolation, and long-term trauma. Awareness is important. These conversations matter. But we must also question why cruelty, threats, and public humiliation are still treated as acceptable responses to someone’s identity. We believe Jamaica is capable of having conversations about sexuality, gender, family, and culture without dehumanizing people in the process. No young person should have to fear losing love, safety, or belonging because of who they are. Changing this reality begins with empathy, education, accountability, and compassion. #TransWaveJa #LGBTQJamaica #TransRightsAreHumanRights

Gender identity and gender expression are not the same thing, and understanding the difference helps create safer, more affirming spaces for transgender and gender non-conforming people. How someone dresses, speaks, or presents themselves does not determine their gender. There is no “correct” way to look trans, masculine, feminine, or non-binary. Respect starts with listening, affirming, and allowing people to define themselves on their own terms. Swipe through to learn more. #TransWaveJA #TransRightsJA#TransEducation #TransVisibility #TransLivesMatter

Trans people are not new; history, culture, and global research all confirm this. From ancient civilizations to modern human rights reports, evidence shows that gender diversity has always existed. What’s changed is the rise of systems that restrict and punish it. If trans people have always existed, then access to healthcare, justice, and dignity should never be up for debate. It’s time for policy to reflect reality. #PolicyTuesday #TransRightsJA #TransHistory

In 1948, the world made a promise through the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: that all people are born free and equal. But for many trans Jamaicans, that promise is still not fully realized. From healthcare access to legal recognition, gaps in policy continue to impact daily life, safety, and dignity. Human rights are not just history, they are a living commitment. And that commitment must include everyone. Because trans rights are human rights. #PolicyTuesday #TransRightsAreHumanRights #TransJamaicans

Did you know? 💡
Trans people can be lesbians too. Gender identity is about who you are, and sexual orientation is about who you love. Trans women who love women are valid lesbians. 💜 Let’s break down stigma, respect identities, and make space for everyone in our community. 🌈 #DidYouKnow #TransWaveJA #LesbianVisibilityWeek #LoveIsLove
