Backstage at Palais Garnier — and yes, this is the opera house that inspired The Phantom of the Opera, published in 1910.
Leroux based parts of the story on real elements of the building, the underground water reservoir, the maze of hidden corridors, and even reports of unusual incidents at the opera. He turned those details into the legend of a figure living beneath the stage.
It’s not just aesthetic - all of that is actually here, and you feel it when you’re there.
As we were being walked through everything, really getting into the ins and outs of the opera, we were lucky enough to go behind the scenes, through the hidden corridors and spaces most people never see, all while preparing to produce this show.
As a MODA team, we put a lot into understanding the space so we could bring it to life for our designers. Seeing the opera from the inside like that shifts your perspective - it’s a living, layered part of cultural and artistic history, and being able to translate that into the show is something we’re genuinely proud of.
A more in depth story to come on the amount of work by a few people it took to create this historical moment in time.
