Next Wednesday afternoon I will be reading at in Chicago at Northwestern, at the site of so many early joys and great despairs, during this intolerable rise in immiseration of the marginalized, brazen kidnappings of students, spiraling theft of public goods by the ultrarich, and ongoing facilitation of mass death. I’ve been thinking a lot about what if anything poetry can do: it can indeed feel toothless. And yet I think we need, desperately, to maintain an access to our own imaginations in order to sabotage, to subvert. It is an intense return for me and cutting through the bitter is the pleasure of this looping back, which is a sort of revision, and I’m grateful for my first poetry professor @racheljamisonwebster for keeping in touch with me over the years, inviting me to class last year (last slide!) and making this big circle happen. 🕳️ If you’re by chance on campus or in the area please come by for the reading — it’s open to the public — or come to my talk on the 22nd, concerning poetics, attention, & liberation and an expansion of the former thoughts 🌀

This summer Ariel Yelen @radicchio___ and I are teaching a two-day intensive workshop on writing the political poem here in Berlin, July 3 & 4. We’ll look at the work of Etel Adnan, Harryette Mullen, Misab Abu Toha, Anne Boyer, Sarah Schulman, Mohammed Zenia Siddiq Yusuf and others, and generate new work with the guidance of exercises and prompts. 6 hours of workshop over two days plus a picnic!
