I usually keep my captions short and sweet but wanted to say a little extra about this one. Got invited to fish on the Rebel this past week for the Montauk Canyon Challenge. We got out to the canyon just before sunset and trolled into dark with no bites until a nice swordfish around 1 am. Up early on the troll at 4 am we got the Bigeye bite we were looking for, an absolute freight train bite. Jimmy on the rod , Mark driving and the rest of the crew on gaff duty we had the fish up to color pretty quick. For twenty minutes we just watched him swim with the boat until we were finally able to reach out and get a gaff in him. Catching big Bigeyes is what we live for and why we go out to the canyon, to catch one like this in a tournament is an adrenaline rush that can’t be explained. It seemed like everyone had a special someone that we were looking up to the sky to for this bite and I really felt like my mom was out there with us on this one because this was a special one. The Bigeye taped out at 76 inches and weighed in at 257 lbs taking first place largest tuna for the grand prize of $158,288. Thanks again Mike, coach, and the rest of the Rebel crew it’s always a pleasure fishing with you guys. Nice job all around by the guys running the tournament I don’t think I’ve ever been so stressed or had so much anxiety watching those live weigh ins the rest of the week. Saved our best efforts for the night. Caught all our fish in the dark this trip. 2 for 2 on Bigeyes, biggest goin over 200 plus, 3 for 4 on swordfish and some yellows and longfin were part of the fall harvest as well.
