Join us for the artist reception of Zones and Projections by Ficus Interfaith (Ryan Bush & Raphael Martinez-Cohen) 🌍🕒🗺️ 🎉 April 9th ⏰ 5:30–8 PM 📍 Tower 49 Gallery An exhibition thinking through maps, time, and the systems we trust to define the world. The building becomes part of the work with maps set against red marble walls, exploring the impossibility of flattening a sphere without distortion. A way of mapping time in space, and of seeing yourself as just a small part of something much larger. The exhibition will accompany a brochure featuring an essay by Camille Okhio available. Cahill Butterfly, 2025 cast cementitious terrazzo 48” x 84” x 1.5”  @tower49gallery   Bernard Joseph Stanislaus Cahill (1866 - 1944) was an American cartographer and architect and the inventor of the octahedral “Butterfly Map” published in 1909 and patented in 1913. His polyhedral Butterfly World Map, like Buckminster Fuller’s later Dymaxion map of 1943 and 1954, enabled all continents to be uninterrupted, and with reasonable fidelity to a globe. Cahill demonstrated this principle by also inventing a rubber-ball globe which could be flattened under a pane of glass in the “butterfly” form, then return to its ball shape.

Time is a human invention. Time zones are at the center of this fantasy, the projections of a deeper uncertainty. Half politics, half sunlight. Somewhere, always, a place is already tomorrow, and somewhere else it is still yesterday. To measure time is to admit defeat beautifully. Every clock is a confession that we do not understand the universe, but we are just tracing its shadow. As we check our phones and sync our watches, we haphazardly believe that the invisible grid we’ve imagined around the planet is neutral and precise😮 Our installation “Universal Coordinated Time, 2025” is on view now on the 23rd floor Sky Lobby of @tower49gallery 📸 @lucas.hoeffel

Time shifts again. ⏰ Europe has already turned its clocks back. 🇪🇺 The U.S. waits another week. 🇺🇸 At Tower 49 Gallery, the artists of @ficusinterfaith will soon reset the 38 clocks of Universal Coordinated Time. The installation tracks every zone across the globe. Each clock marks a political compromise, a human edit to the natural rhythm of day and night a perfect reflection of Zones and Projections, where maps and time reveal their distortions. As Daylight Saving Time ends, it’s a reminder of how we bend time to fit our own systems. 📍 Tower 49 Gallery, New York 🗽 Free and open to the public ✨ #FicusInterfaith #ZonesAndProjections #tower49 #Tower49Gallery #ContemporaryArt #ArtInNYC #NYCArt #ArtExhibition #InstallationArt #TimeArt #MapArt #PublicArt #ArtAndTime #ArtWorld #TimeZones #DaylightSavings

Seven maps. Thirty-eight clocks. The planet distorted. Time negotiated. Ficus Interfaith: Zones and Projections explores the human need to make sense of what cannot be contained. Space, time, and truth itself. 📍 Tower 49 Gallery, NYC Free & open to the public. #ZonesAndProjections #FicusInterfaith #Tower49Gallery #NYCArt #ContemporaryArt #ArtInNYC #ArtExhibition #InstallationArt #MapArt #TimeZones #PublicArt #NYCExhibitions #TimeAndSpace #Distortion #DaylightSavings

OSCARSCAPE: Inner landscapes from the artist Oscar Oiwa @oscar.oiwa Reception: Thursday, March 6, 2025 at Tower 49 Gallery 12 East 49th Street 5:30 – 7:30 PM Oscar’s paintings, drawings, sculptures, and installations unfold fantastical visions grounded in the real world: vaporous, amoeba-shaped clouds floating above a nighttime cityscape; shimmering currents of a violet river churning beneath an impossibly long, narrow bridge; swirls of intense color that could be the surface of a pond or disruptions in the stratosphere; dense green forests bursting with particles of light. Although inspired by his travels around the globe, these scenes, the artist writes, are “not the real physical world but the result of my experience living in a certain place.” They are what he terms oscarscapes: “things I saw not with my eyes but my soul.” #OscarOiwa #OSCARESCAPE #ArtExhibition #NYCExhibitions #ContemporaryArt #OlympicArt #ArtInNYC #NYCArt #PublicArt #tower49gallery #midtownnyc
