🕵️ Where are we?
Clue #1: Established in 1853, this 50-acre resting place began in what was then Norfolk County.
Clue #2: More than 400 Union and Confederate Civil War veterans are buried here.
Clue #3: Its grounds are filled with ornate Victorian-era funerary art, telling stories in stone.
Clue #4: In 1855, during a devastating yellow fever epidemic that claimed thousands of lives across Hampton Roads, more than 100 victims were buried here in family plots — and many more in unmarked mass graves when coffins ran out.
Clue #5: Among its pathways rest numerous local, state, and nationally significant figures.
📍 Answer: Elmwood Cemetery, Norfolk, Virginia — a landscape of memory reflecting resilience, tragedy, and the layered history of a city.
A grand dame of the oceanfront. 🌊🏨
Overlooking the Atlantic since 1927, the Cavalier Hotel is Virginia Beach’s most iconic landmark- symbolizing the city’s transformation from a quiet seaside town into a nationally recognized resort destination.
An outstanding example of Jeffersonian-inspired Classical Revival architecture, the Cavalier is the last surviving pre–World War II beachfront hotel in the city. Built during the height of the “Roaring Twenties,” it embodied luxury, elegance, and an elite clientele. Its commanding perch above the ocean set it apart from other grand hotels of its era, dominating the skyline of what was then a small coastal community.
During World War II, the U.S. Navy repurposed the hotel as a radar training school, contributing to the war effort before it reopened as a resort in the postwar years.
As America approaches its 250th anniversary in 2026, the Cavalier Hotel stands as a testament to Virginia Beach’s growth, resilience, and enduring place in the story of Hampton Roads—from coastal retreat to nationally celebrated destination.

America’s first federally authorized lighthouse. 🌊🇺🇸
The Cape Henry Lighthouse has commanded the entrance to Hampton Roads since 1792. Authorized, completed, and lighted by the newly organized federal government, with the construction bid approved by George Washington, it stands as a powerful symbol of the young nation’s commitment to maritime safety and commerce.
Designed by John McComb Jr. of New York, the tapered octagonal tower, faced with hammer-dressed sandstone ashlar, was the first of three lighthouses he designed. Put into operation in October 1792, it marked a new era of federal responsibility and infrastructure in the early republic.
In 1881, lighthouse duties were transferred to a newer tower nearby, and in 1930 the original lighthouse was deeded to Preservation Virginia, ensuring its preservation as a museum. It stands near the site where English colonists first landed in 1607, within what is now First Landing State Park, linking the story of early America with the birth of the federal government.
As we approach America’s 250th anniversary in 2026, the Cape Henry Lighthouse remains a beacon of beginnings—of exploration, independence, and a nation learning to light its own way.

🏫 Pleasant Ridge School Historic District: A Window into Black Education in Virginia Beach
Located south of Pungo, this historic district includes a one-room schoolhouse, a mid-20th-century church, and a cemetery with burials dating back to 1904. Built around 1886 and moved to serve Black children in grades 1–7 during the Jim Crow era, Pleasant Ridge School operated until 1956, when Virginia Beach began school consolidation and desegregation.
Today, it stands as a rare surviving one-room schoolhouse in the region. Archaeological studies of the site reveal artifacts and layers that illuminate the history, activism, and community life of Black communities in Princess Anne County and beyond.

Fields of history along the Chesapeake. 🌾🌊
Bayville’s broad, level fields- set on a peninsula framed by Pleasure House Creek and Bayville Creek - represent some of the earliest agricultural lands in what was once Princess Anne County. Long considered one of the last open spaces in northern Virginia Beach, the landscape carried centuries of stories.
The Federal-style plantation house begun in 1826 as a side-passage dwelling for John Singleton was later expanded into a five-bay residence by James Garrison. Its distinctive brick ends reflected a building tradition common throughout the Chesapeake region. Beyond the house itself, the property preserved a remarkable collection of undisturbed prehistoric and historic archaeological sites, offering insight into human activity stretching back generations.
Although the surrounding farmland was later developed into a golf course in a manner mindful of the historic landscape, tragedy struck in August 2007 when the Bayville Farm house was destroyed by lightning and fire.
As we approach America’s 250th anniversary in 2026, Bayville reminds us that history is not only found in standing structures—but also in landscapes, archaeology, and the stories we choose to remember and protect.
