Finally caught the new docu “It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley”, now in cinemas in the UK. While it was extraordinary seeing my work and name projected on a huge screen, the film left me emotionally drained. Watching an old friend, long ago passed, come to life again brought back all the memories of our friendship - marauding the streets of East Village, (I half-expected to pop up in the film any moment the camera turned on Sin-é or Thompkins Sq Park), Jeff being the best hugger ever, or how, when you were in his company, you seemed to be the only person that mattered to him. He was a beautiful soul, troubled, as we both were, young, innocent and struggling as artists in a city that didn’t seem to appreciate what we had to offer, at the time at least. He disappeared from New York post-Grace, and we pretty much lost touch with each other. Was wonderful yet painful to now find out about his life that had become an enigma to me in the last two years of his life. I would bump into Rebekah now and again, and I became friends (and then his tenant) with Micky, Jeff’s bass player, so bits of info on the road trickled through, but I never saw Jeff again after ‘95 or so. Then, one summer afternoon, my old fax machine slash phone in my Alphabet City loft rang, and my friend Jon Ames broke the news of Jeff’s passing. Numbness - that’s what I felt, as I tend to when I’m incapable of processing news that is so horrible that my brain shuts down. Thirty years on, I still find it unfair that a good man, a decent human, and yes, a great talent, was taken from us at such a young age. How would he have enhanced our lives with his art had he stuck around a bit longer - frustratingly, we will never know… I enjoyed the film; can’t objectively judge it on merit obviously, but it’s worth a watch. It doesn’t have the emotional punch of something like the Rodriguez “Searching For Sugarman” film did, which I consider the best music documentary ever, but if you want to learn about one of the greatest singers ever, you could do worse than catch it at your nearest movie house #jeffbuckley #itsneveroverjeffbuckley

So, I’ve been reading a lot about how other artists approach posting their work and thus exposing themselves to criticism. Apparently you should do it even if you’re not entirely happy with the work. In that spirit, I’ll be posting a lot more here and see what the response is. Most of the times I’m unhappy with the results of my work, but perhaps through audience interaction I’ll gain more (less?) confidence to shoot more and post more. I’ll report back This series, specifically, is a new approach for me as I don’t feel comfortable shooting people - hence my focus on abstract imagery. Can’t promise more of this, but I might post more experiments with human subjects in the future…
