In light of Peter Gabriel releasing his next song on tonight’s full moon(!) thought I’d share this photo from way back. Photographer Steve Kalinsky showed it to me, though he didn’t know who took it… it’s Peter’s band in action - Sid McGinnis is at center doing his guitar jump, in front of Jerry Marotta, who’s playing bass! There’s me with the Stick, and on the left, sax player Tim Cappello. And about to crash the last drum hit of the piece, that’s Peter himself, wearing the English orange road workers vest. The year was probably ’78, and the song was definitely Waiting for the Big One… where Peter appeared out in the audience with a radio mic (a new development back then) and we onstage switched instruments while he was out there. When Peter realized, on returning to stage, that I was playing drums, he asked me to hand him the sticks and he took over on drums - I moved to the Stick. Wild times.
Last night we finished our 27 show StickMen tour, and it was a great one. One of the high points for me; after our show at Reggies in Chicago, I met with the two daughters of Oscar Pettiford, my bass hero from way back. (Throwing in the photo below - I blinked, but who cares!)
Next up; Levin Brothers with Pat LaBarbara will tour Canada and NorthEast, then in June, BEAT tours Europe, and release of the 2nd printing of Book of BEAT, my photo book from the tours. And coming soon, pre-orders for the new Stick Men album, which we’re very excited about. Hope to see some of you at the upcoming shows.
