Motion Study:
A little peak at the 8mm celluloid family film I’ve been editing to my new clarinet piece ‘Motion Study’
A lot of the footage is quite damaged and out of focus (most of it’s from the mid 1970’s). Also, the perforations that guide the frames had eroded in certain places, making the film stutter and run out of sync but I’ve intentionally kept most of that in and worked with it.
I was still writing the music when I was editing the film so each medium has kind of informed the other, evolving in tandem. It’s been a bit of a weird process, but rewarding (and emotional) in lots of ways.
The full music video will release when the album comes out on Denovali Records later this year…. Gigs to follow.

This is a teaser reel from the short film ‘Aqui me Quedo’ showcasing some sections of the score I wrote for it. Was an absolute joy working with this team. To be trusted with this material and given the freedom to explore such deep and rich themes was a real treat.
You can watch the full film on Youtube, where it was co-shared by none other than THE Leonardo DiCaprio! 🤩 Just follow the link in my bio.

Supposed to be working but can’t help going back and editing this 8mm film (footage of my family from the 70’s). The tail end of the reels are some of my favourite parts - the fleeting moments when the reels run out past the projector gate. Had to screen grab some and share 😊
Memories I can’t really recall of a time too distant to relate to anymore. Going through old 8mm family footage. Handling the same reels of film my late father would’ve shot and recorded, then watching it projected in the dark is a heady mixture of emotions. Took a break from projecting on the wall to try it out on my hand. Hopefully going to use some of this in a new music video soon.
Test animation / rotoscope idea I’m working on for a track from the forthcoming Origamibiro album (out later this year on Denovali Records). I really didnt really want to be the protagonist but I’ve found I’m very reasonable to work with… I’m always free when I need me and I don’t charge much either.
Experimenting with clarinet and glockenspiel, then playing around with various audio processing tools. This object catching the sunlight seemed to fit the sounds quite nicely! Any guesses as to what the object is?
Some footage from a little woodland field recording trip I arranged recently. I recorded my good friend and talented musician, Marguerite McMullin, playing flute in the woods, together with the birds and trees.
I captured the recordings at a high sample rate using two condenser microphones positioned at varying distances of stereo width. Then, instead of slowing them down using conventional methods, I played the files back at a lower sample rate.
The result is an incredibly clear sound (probably not as clear after uploading on here!) with the least amount of processing artefacts introduced. Have a listen to the last video in this series (with headphones). The intro reveals the birdsong as it was prior to editing, before descending into a wild jungle of alien sounds. As well as Margy warming up, you might also hear me fiddling about on my kalimba.
I’ll be using recordings like these on my forthcoming Origamibiro album, which will be out on Denovali records later this year.

BLACK ZERO. New Single by ST. LUCIFERIN.
Was asked recently if this is A.I.
We fancied trying a little science experiment with this release. Using PVA glue, food colouring and washing up liquid, we edited footage of the way these elements interact, capturing the process with this little teaser.
Would likely have saved a lot of time if we’d used A.I. But where’s the fun in that? Also, probably saved a few gallons of water 💦 😅

Release day! I wrote this suite as a set piece for performance back in 2019. I got to play it live once in London that year, at the Brunel Museum. I was joined by two violinists and a double bassist with myself playing piano, viola da gamba and operating various digital devices.
The plan was to finish the recording in 2020 and release it, but Covid hit and for a number of reasons it just never got released. So, I figured this would be a good way to launch my new music library.
Under the slightly altered moniker of ‘Tom Will Hill’ this release sees the launch of my new channel, which will consist of all the scores I’ve written for film over the past 20 years, together with a few previously unreleased pieces (like this one).
I’ll be rearranging and remastering this work, so the music should sound pretty fresh even if you’ve heard it before. But this new platform will also give me the opportunity to release a varied mix of music that not only reflects the different kinds of projects I’ve worked on over the years but to put out all those odd pieces that never quite fit thematically into anything else.
You’ll be able to find this new work via all the usual streaming platforms (and Bandcamp if you’d like to buy). Just click the top link from my bio :)
