I’ve been posting one of my favorite images from India in black & white every day for a few days. This is the last one.
It’s of a Sadhu taken in Varanasi, the holiest city in Hinduism. Huge thanks to the Sadhu Baba for allowing me to take his picture and to @india.manoj.photographer who tee’d us up with him.
I’ve posted it before in colour. But it’s much better in Black & White (in my opinion!).

I’ve been back from India for a couple of weeks now. So had a bit of time to edit the photos….. so it’s back to my favorite style…. Black & White!
Going to post one of my favorite images from India in black & white every day for a few days.
This one is of a Paneer (cottage cheese) maker/ wholesaler in Kolkata.

I’m posting one of my images from India in black & white every day for a few days.
This one is of an Indian wrestler in a shaft of light in a wrestling gym near Varanasi.
I think this is one of my favorite images from the whole trip. I’ve posted it in colour before but it’s better in black & white (in my opinion!).

Have Neutral Density Filter - will travel! 🤣🤣
I’ve been out and about to the various waterfalls in the Upper Eden Valley.
Pictures include Rutter Falls, Hells Gill and the Stenkrith Gorge at Kirkby Stephen. All on the River Eden.
One pic is of Hardraw Force in the Ure Catchment. Just over the hill from the top of the Eden’s source.

In a sad and slightly desperate search for external validation of some sort I have uploaded the videos of my 1100 kms walk down the Ganges. Previously posted on Instagram they are now on YouTube too. Link in bio.
You could while away hours watching a sweaty and slightly grumpy Tom wandering through the by-roads of Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh whilst trying to persuade the bewildered locals to have their photo taken.
If you are somehow inspired to do something similar then my friends @baldhiker , @ankkitmahato and @theunreadytraveler are taking a group trekking from Gangotri to the course glacier of the Ganges in September 2026. A link to further info on this is also in the bio.
Enjoy.
In 2013 I did a trip to The Gambia for @baldhiker
At the time Gambia was ruled by the notorious and ruthless dictator Yahya Jammeh - I’m glad to say he was ousted in 2016.
The Gambia is a country full of lovely people. And I’d love to return one day.
Photo wise I had two zooms at the time (a 28-70 f2.8 and 70-200 f2.8 zoom) …. and you can tell …. as I’ve loads of tight ‘headshot’ portraits with shallow depth of field! I must have been excited by it! I tend to stand back more now and ‘be there and f8’ 🤣🤣
I like the last pic of the little girl side-eyeing the misbehaving boys..

A few pics from our family trip to Ghent & Bruges a few weeks ago. Good company, good food and some good beer. Was the week after mum died. But, in a way, it was good to be away.

Rest in Peace Mum

Not quite the century you were aiming for but a great innings nevertheless.
Sorry for the bad scans of your childhood photos. And you would have hated the Covid ‘lock down’ hair photo.
Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 - Pasant Panchami - one year on.
After the crowd crush at the second Royal Bathing Day on 29th January 2025 people were very nervous of what might happen on the next big parade.
For me it changed how I would approach it and instead of going to the site the evening before I stayed in my digs until the 2 or 3 am or so. I then walked to the site which took me a couple of hours. When I got there I discovered that the police had changed the layout to try and control the crowd more. I found I could no longer get close to the parade area via the route I’d used before - there were many more barriers. Luckily I managed to blag my way through as a very kind policeman took pity on me and let me through the police barriers. So I ended up with great access to the sadhu parade and the main Triveni Sangam. Huge thank you to that policeman as it was my last chance to get to the waterfront.
I won’t say much more but the video shows you something of the experience of being in the midst of sadhu parade and with them at the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna and mythical Saraswati rivers. Bathing at this auspicious time is believed to wash away sins and bring spiritual purification. Best with the sound up if you can.
That’s it now for my India posts (for now?). Two great adventures - walking from the glacier to Prayagraj in 2024 and then attending the Kumbh Mela in 2025.
I think family and friends have had enough of me banging on about it! 🤣🤣🤣

One year ago today there was a crush at the Maha Kumbh Mela. This video is my experience of that night. I was close to the waterside at around midnight but it was so packed that I turned around and ended up just trying to sleep on the ground near a temporary police station. By the time I got back to the waterside around 5.30-6.00 am the crush had happened and the parade had been postponed. I found out later that @amolrajan was on the other side of the river filming his documentary. So it was interesting to see his version of that night when they aired it on the television.
The UP government concluded 37 people died in the crush and 70 were injured. The BBC said they‘d verified 82 deaths.
My condolences to those who lost loved ones.
