PASSING CRAZE IS OUT NOW A phantasmagoric, electric and acoustic tale of dreams, delusion, failure and redemption in the music industry.
FFO: Bob Dylan, Scott Walker, Tom Waits, Elliott Smith, Leonard Cohen, John Cale
Passing Craze, my sixth solo album in four years, began as a final university project for Evan Collett, who produced the album for me. Evan plays bass in my band Rainyday Rainbow. He needed to make an album for his final project in DBS, Bristol; a university that specialises in music production. DBS stands for Deep Blue Sound. He asked me if I had any unrecorded material. I thought about it, and made some demos; it turned out I had quite a few forgotten gems, fragments and songs from years ago, some of them going back to when I first started writing songs when I was a teenager. They seemed to fit together and felt like they had a thread running through them. We started recording in an amazing room at DBS, with an impressive, hugely expensive analog desk. First we laid down skeletal acoustic guitar for 14 songs, doubled in an Elliott Smith style, then embellished with drums, piano, electric guitar and harmonica. It was made more difficult by the university only allowing recording to be booked in three-hour sessions, meaning we had to rush to get the parts done, and it all took a bit longer. Maybe that was a good thing in the end, though. After Evan finished his course, we kept working on the songs at home in Cardiff. The project took on more of a bedroom pop sound as we added more guitar, vocals, trumpet, melodica, percussion by my drummer Jack Patrick, and backing vocals by Alys Hardy. Evan added some interesting production flair, such as slide guitar and playing banjo with a violin bow; just trying to get interesting sounds and do things a bit differently. We retrieved Evan's grandfather's old Roland analog synth from the 70s, which had been locked away in a storage unit as his parents' house was having work done. It added a lot to the sound of the album. I'm really proud of the album and I hope you like it as well!
