PASSING CRAZE IS OUT NOW A phantasmagoric, electric and acoustic tale of dreams, delusion, failure and redemption in the music industry. FFO: Bob Dylan, Scott Walker, Tom Waits, Elliott Smith, Leonard Cohen, John Cale Passing Craze, my sixth solo album in four years, began as a final university project for Evan Collett, who produced the album for me. Evan plays bass in my band Rainyday Rainbow. He needed to make an album for his final project in DBS, Bristol; a university that specialises in music production. DBS stands for Deep Blue Sound. He asked me if I had any unrecorded material. I thought about it, and made some demos; it turned out I had quite a few forgotten gems, fragments and songs from years ago, some of them going back to when I first started writing songs when I was a teenager. They seemed to fit together and felt like they had a thread running through them. We started recording in an amazing room at DBS, with an impressive, hugely expensive analog desk. First we laid down skeletal acoustic guitar for 14 songs, doubled in an Elliott Smith style, then embellished with drums, piano, electric guitar and harmonica. It was made more difficult by the university only allowing recording to be booked in three-hour sessions, meaning we had to rush to get the parts done, and it all took a bit longer. Maybe that was a good thing in the end, though. After Evan finished his course, we kept working on the songs at home in Cardiff. The project took on more of a bedroom pop sound as we added more guitar, vocals, trumpet, melodica, percussion by my drummer Jack Patrick, and backing vocals by Alys Hardy. Evan added some interesting production flair, such as slide guitar and playing banjo with a violin bow; just trying to get interesting sounds and do things a bit differently. We retrieved Evan's grandfather's old Roland analog synth from the 70s, which had been locked away in a storage unit as his parents' house was having work done. It added a lot to the sound of the album. I'm really proud of the album and I hope you like it as well! Order vinyl from @dirtycarrotrecs website, link in bio. Miss Understood is out today! The final single from my new album Passing Craze, which you can preorder on vinyl from the @dirtycarrotrecs website (link in bio). Some of my favourite synth parts on the album; they add a suitably paranoid and menacing atmosphere, also helped by the repetitive structure. I also played lead guitar through the synth, an interesting sound which you can hear on the third verse. Sometimes an accusatory song isn't so much about casting blame, but accepting your own blame for a situation, even if the words seem bitter and finger-pointing. This song came to me very quickly and fully-formed. Originally it was meant to have a slight dub reggae influence. Some of the lines could have been a country song; 'good time to drink, must have been a bad time to think'. The lyrics could have been redrafted or rewritten to some extent, but it would have resulted in something less pure. I think sometimes a line that feels awkward or contrived can work, if you deliver it with the appropriate acid touch. The harmonised solo at the end of the song was improvised on the spot and felt perfect for the dark, angular post-punk vibe I was going for. It's ideal to make something musical out of the bad times as well as the good times. Picking up the pieces and using failure, misunderstanding and happenstance in a creative way. Sometimes it's only when everything has gone wrong, and you're surveying a devastated and fragmentary landscape, that things start to make sense in retrospect. šŸ“ø@alys_hardy
