"When we don’t feel like cooking, we open an app and order dinner from a system built to keep its own less-than-palatable “ingredients” off the receipt. The small print that would, if it existed, mention extremely inhumane working conditions, social security fraud, risk pushed onto workers and customers, and a subcontracting business model that prizes entrepreneurial 'freedom' over the people who prop it up." A few months ago, I met with Salwa Aleryani @salwaleryani for the @berlinleft to talk about how her studio space, provided by the Berufsverband Bildender KĂŒnstler (BBK), was among those marked for closure under the latest round of cultural budget cuts. For decades, the BBK has quietly sustained Berlin’s creative life offering affordable studios to artists in a city that’s become increasingly unaffordable. But as we spoke, the conversation widened. These cuts aren’t just threatening individual studios; they’re revealing a broader pattern in how public funding is being withdrawn. The first to lose support are often migrant, decolonial, and community-run initiatives, while major institutions remain insulated. At the same time, Berlin’s police budget continues to expand, justified under the language of “security” and “order.” Millions are being redirected toward surveillance technologies and crowd-control infrastructure, even as spaces for art, gathering, and dialogue are quietly dismantled. The imbalance says a lot about what, and who, the city chooses to protect. Read more in bio Photo by Ladislav Zajac of AnaĂŻs HĂ©raud-Louisadat @anais_heraud_louisadat studio.

a cab driver in bangkok told me the four seasons in thailand are hot, v hot, v v hot and v v v hot. It was ‘just’ hot season when I was there but still 33 some days and humid so I wandered these streets looking like id run a marathon, which ofc would never happen because I’ve got better things to do. Anyway, what an incredible place.

While Palestinian families in Berlin watch their people massacred through their phones, others behind the scenes are working overtime to criminalize them and activists who support them for even the smallest act of protest, mourning, or solidarity. From language bans and police crackdowns to smear campaigns and visa threats, repression in Germany is continuing to reach terrifying new levels. For the @berlinleft , I spoke to ELSC about the Index of Repression, a public database documenting these cases and the shadowy mechanisms that pull the strings behind-the-scenes. Tomorrow marks 80 years since the U.S. dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. In a city long defined by remembrance and peace, a small group has broken the silence. Since October 2023, the Hiroshima Palestine Vigil has gathered regularly at the Atomic Bomb Dome to mourn the genocide in Gaza and demand an end to Japanese complicity. Their message is simple but urgent: Peace means nothing without justice. Remembrance means nothing if we refuse to see. Read the full piece @berlinleft . Link in bio @bigbigbigthings

If you order food from Wolt, Uber Eats, deliveroo etc did you know there’s a chance the person who brought it to your door is on less than minimum wage or might not even have been paid? Many of these companies operate through shady subcontracting setups designed to separate them from liability. “Fleet partners” often charge illegal onboarding fees of up to €500, skim wages, and pay workers in cash. Riders are routinely left without payslips, proper contracts, or any legal documentation of what they’ve earned, making it nearly impossible to file a claim later. And sometimes they just don’t pay at all. Read about the conditions migrant workers face while they’re rushing across town to bring you your lunch. It’s truly horrific but there are ways to help. Link in bio. @berlinleft
