Thanks to everyone who came along to our first Repair Club: Lamps Edition at TOG this week 💡
This was a new format for us: part class, part discussion, part skill-sharing, and part standing around a lamp figuring out what had gone wrong.
We looked at common lamp faults, rewiring, testing, plugs, switches, lamp holders, and some of the physical repairs that come up when bringing an old lamp back into use.
A big thank you to Jeffrey Roe for leading the workshop and helping shed a little light on lamp repair.
The event took place as part of Dublin Climate Action Week, with a focus on repair, reuse, and keeping useful things out of the bin.
We are hoping to run the next Repair Club in around six weeks. More details soon.

IRTS president Jeffrey visited the Chemnitz-Süd ham radio club yesterday, big thanks to Jens DB5JH, Mario DM5AHA, Carsten DG0JCG, Jürgen DL4JWU, Wolfgang DL5WSC, and Veiko DM9TT for their warm welcome and hospitality! #amateurradio #hamradio
One of our TOG members is bringing a bit of Irish maker energy to Germany today 🇮🇪🇩🇪
Jeffrey is at FabLab Chemnitz for Open European Lab Day, running a hands-on workshop called Hidden Colors.
The workshop explores light, polarisation and the secret colours hiding in everyday materials like plastics and tape. It is a lovely mix of science, making, curiosity and hands-on experimenting.
Big thanks to FabLab Chemnitz and the Stadtfabrikanten team for the warm welcome.

One of our TOG members, now living in Vermont, has started a YouTube channel all about growing food, garden beds, practical projects and learning by doing.
Part Fusion Life is full of the kind of hands-on curiosity we love at TOG: trying things, making things, fixing things and sharing what you learn along the way.
Give the channel a look and support a fellow member starting something new 🌱🔧

There’s nothing quite like the first green glow of a retro CRT coming back to life 💚
Our member Eduard recently brought a Mera CM 7209 terminal into Tog. It still needs more work, but over a few evenings, with help from Ambrose, Garry and Roman, the screen lit up and showed its first signs of life.
Even better, inside this Polish Eastern Bloc-era terminal were chips marked “Made in Ireland”. A lovely little reminder that the connected world has been around for a while, just with heavier hardware.

A small repair, but a satisfying one.
We cracked open an electric shaver at TOG, swapped out the tired batteries, and got it back up and running. Along the way we also did a little battery investigation on some old stock we found, with one unopened cell giving us a bit of a surprise.
It’s a nice reminder that plenty of everyday things are still worth opening up, understanding, and repairing.

This Flymo arrived at TOG with a badly cracked casing just as grass-cutting season is kicking off.
Glue was never going to do the job, so our member Ambrose reached for the plastic welder. By melting the plastic and embedding metal staples from the inside, the case got the strength it needed while still looking tidy on the outside.
Just one more example of the kind of repair that becomes possible when you have the right tools and the right people around you.
