I immediately fell in love with Talk’s debut record at the end of 2023 and was bold enough to slide into the DM’s (slide 2) to say how much of a fan girl I was. I’m really glad Nick (TALK) wrote me back and said he was down to write with me sometime. Over the last 2 years we have been writing, recording, dreaming and scheming with his brilliant partner in rock and roll, Connor Riddell, as well as so many brilliant writers and musicians. Excited that the first single “Time Machine” (written by Nick, Con and some amazingly talented Canadian buds of theirs) is out finally. Had the honor of playing on it and producing it with the legend, Joey Moi, and recording it with an incredible band of misfits here in Nashville last fall. Also, it was mixed by my incredibly talented brother, Bryan Brown. Check it out now! Can’t wait for you all to hear the whole project. I am so proud of it!!!
The difference between a hobby, a hustle, and a calling.
"I was created to create" that sounds simple, but it’s not. Because if you’re building anything real, a song, a company, a career, a reputation, a life, you already know money can’t be the only reason. It is NOT for everyone...
Money matters. Nobody is pretending it doesn’t. But if money is the only thing pulling you forward, the hard parts will eventually take you out.
The no’s. The strange seasons. The meetings that feel promising and go nowhere. The months where you’re working like crazy and the outside world can’t see any of it yet.
That’s true whether you’re a songwriter in Nashville, a music executive, a founder, a manager, a publisher, an artist, a creator, or anyone trying to build something that actually lasts.
At some point, you have to believe before it makes sense. You have to be a little delusional. Not in a fake confidence way. More like, “I know this is going to work, even if I can’t fully prove it yet.”
That kind of blind optimism gets laughed at early. Then, if you stay in the game long enough, people call it vision.
That’s what I loved about what Tofer said. He wasn’t just talking about writing hit songs or surviving the music business. He was talking about the reason people keep going when the obvious reward is not there yet.
And honestly, that might be the separator.
Some people are chasing the look of success. Other people are answering something deeper. They create because they have to. They build because something in them won’t let it go.
That’s the difference between a hobby, a hustle, and a calling.
“I was created to create.”
First of all, a big Happy Birthday shout out to Carly today! Wrote this on Carly’s tour bus in Indianapolis last April. I just remember it falling out fast and thinking Carly’s dogs, Johnny and June, were very territorial with their momma and they very well could attack me at any minute haha. So happy to have written this with Carly, Carter Faith and Lauren Hungate! Check out “You Can Have Him” out now!
Had the pleasure of vocal producing and engineering Carter’s vocals for her new collab with Kygo, “That’s When You Know”. This song is a summer anthem waiting to happen! Amazing production and song by Kygo and his crew and an incredible mix by Serban Ghenea. Check it out!
I still don’t even know how to process this. 🥹 I am so proud of “Cherry Valley” and Carter and everyone who helped us bring it to life. We did it, Carter!!! And also, to share it with my brother, Bryan, who mixed the whole record is just the biggest “Cherry” on top! Thank you ACM’s for this nomination and the happiest moment of my entire career! In the words of Faith Hill, “Let’s Go To Vegas”!
Happy “Tell Me How You Really Feel” album release day to Katelyn Tarver! Had the pleasure of writing “Don’t Eat Pray Love” with Katelyn and my boy, Mikey Reaves, who masterfully produced it! And thanks Mikey for asking me to play bass and keys on it as well as “So Am I”. Check it out now!
Well, this week really happened. Thank you to Carter, her band, team and the whole Tonight Show staff for allowing me to check off this bucket list moment!
The beauty of being a songwriter is never knowing where your songs might end up. Marit Larsen and I wrote the title track to her album “When The Morning Comes” about 12 years ago and it has always been one of my favorites. It has always felt like a modern hymn in a way to me. Was absolutely floored by the release and TV performance of Espen Lind & Herborg Kråkevik version of it in Marit’s native language, Norwegian. Thank you two for breathing such beautiful new life into this song! Check out “Når dagen gryr” out now!
